Because we obviously know, MC is way too stupid to take cover or use any of his training that he learned as a kid against rabid people that use scavenged weaponry and rarely any armor. Also that Mc can’t pick up any other weapons because his hands are guled to his shotgun.

It doesn’t need to lock up, it will only lock up upon heavy impact.

Mc is able to manually adjust the presure of the gel, also the suit has sensors that automatically adjusts the pressurization of the gel layer.
