As some of you might have noticed, both FactPile and FactpileTopia have been acting up even more than usual recently. While some items are easy fixes, others are not. Here’s the sitch. FactPile is now on it’s own dedicated server. This is *supposed* to make the site faster. But, when we transferred everything over, we found a ton of bloated code in both the php and MYSQL database that essentially powers everything on this site.
The bloated code is from my hack programming skills tinkering with the site to try and deliver more options, faster speeds and a better overall experience for all of us. The result over time is that I’ve added soo much crap to the db that it just sucks down the resources no matter what server it’s on. If you know any php or MySQL gurus, please have them contact me!
Another fun part about this process is that as the files were moved, some functionality was either temporarily or as of now, still unable to properly perform. For example, I saw one comment where Skrunks couldn’t comment. Just a bug that we need to work out. Also, for some reason right now, I can’t update certain posts – so if you have a question, it’s best to send me an email for a reply until everything is worked out.
Also, I had the brilliant idea to make all the battles for the entire week all at once – and before the transfer of files to the new server. All of those posts were lost. What bothers me the most is that the people credited for suggesting the matches is gone forever. As soon as I post a match, I delete the email sent that had the request on it. So for those who see your match appear on the site in the next few weeks without your being properly accredited, please accept my apologies. Because of the massive loss of time and posts, over the next two weeks, I might not be able to post 2 matches per day as you’ve all come to expect. Just be patient as I get caught up and move forward.
I originally had planned on launching the new design last week, but of course, that’s when all the migration issues started to arise, and I didn’t want to bother the techs about something trivial as the look of the site. Once I feel that all the major issues are resolved, I will push the new look live to the site. I know some will like it, some will hate it, and to some, it won’t matter at all.
All of these growing pains we’re going through right now are essential for the growth of FactPile. Once I can get through all of this, which should hopefully only take a week or so, I can focus on more important things. I’ll be posting in the last week of December about the future plans of FactPile and all the places that it touches and what the battle plan for 2010 will be.
I hope you can all give me some breathing room until all these changes are worked out. Keep on requesting matches, just keep in mind that they might not appear for a few weeks.

PS – I have a question that I’d like for you to give some thought to before you reply. I know in some fan fiction and posts on this site, we’ve referred to FactPile as a “place” along the lines of nation of sorts. My question is – what would our “FactPile Flag” have on it? What colors would be on the flag? What symbolism would we use to represent us?

so back to the flag i believe we where discussing the use of a sword in it, and perhaps the use of the FP or Factpile on the flag itself.
i dont think the flag itself needs either FP of Factpile on it, since most flags, dont need the words of what they represent on them as it kinda defeats the point of a flag in the first place.

My thoughts precisely. I think that such imagery are more fitting to banners and standards, but not a conventional flag.
That said, we have not yet DECIDED whether conventional flag is what we all want. That may be what I preffer along with Sapper and a few others, but no real decision has been made. I think that Expert’s and Orpheous’ ideas fit a bit better on a poster or a web splash page, but their concepts have not been entirely ruled out either.
Regardless. I think this is one of those things where people need to talk a bit less and do a bit more. We need to start seeing numerous sketches from everybody so we can better make a decision about the whole thing.

Not trying to be a dick, but I find that flags with more than three dominant colors are better than those with just two, especially when complex patterns are used. The checked pattern is also not easy on the eyes, but does make it more noticeable.
But then again, what do I know!

Hmm, this new system is going to take getting used to. Admin, is there any way that the old gravatars could be reinstated. It was nice as it helped prevent the same person from spamming under different names, we caught a few xena fans and some halo fans that way. Or are gravatars gone for good?
