As all of you who frequent this site know, I am a huge fan of the Legend of the Seeker show. And since that show was taking material from Terry Goodkind’s “Sword of Truth” series, I knew the show would have some good qualities to it.
And it does – considering the budget of about 1.8 million per show, a lot of it goes into the costumes and sets that the actors appear in. The cost for the talent is normalized because all of them with the exception of Bruce Spence (he played the crazy helicopter guy in Mad Max) were no-namers prior to being cast on the show.
It was learned earlier that the show will not be renewed for a third season. The third season is absolutely critical to a syndicated production since three years worth of episodes can potentially live in syndication forever. The original Star Trek TV show is the proof of this. They too only lasted three years on the air, but because of the re-runs and social stance it took at the time, it became part of American pop culture.
So, since I am a supporter of the show, I frequent other sites that talk about the show and I became a fan of the show on facebook. I’ve been getting daily emails about how we can save the show by emailing all the studios and sponsors telling them we are fans and want to see it continue.
It’s fantastic to see the passion that people have for a little show that while it has terribly mangled the Goodkind Sword of Truth canon, it has added some layers of new story telling and most importantly it has exposed a new audience to the books.
The problem that all these fans don’t seem to realize and the sponsors already know is this: Numbers dictate whether or not a show gets renewed. In this economy, every penny must be measured and has to work twice as hard for the advertiser. The issue is that while Legend of the Seeker is entertaining for those who like the fantasy genre and anything similar to Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, the show doesn’t have the same commercial appeal.
The studios can spend $125 million to make a Harry Potter movie because not only will it quad-drouple that in the theater, but it will also probably sell at least 10 million DVD copies when it comes out – a very safe bet in these economical times. Seeker needs to be watched by more people, and the show in season two tried the old “let’s sex everything up” to get more viewership and it hasn’t worked.
Some people are pointing to the bad and inconsistent viewing times that the show airs. A fair statement, but nothing that great story-telling and marketing couldn’t overcome.
So, I applaud the effort of all the fans who are working relentlessly to get the show another season. I commend them.
Would I like a third season? Of course. I’d love to see it run for a decade. But, the show simply hasn’t captured the mainstream audiences which is crucial in getting those vaunted rankings that can save a show from perishing.
Despite all of that, at the end of this thought, I have included all the links and information for those who want to “Save the Seeker”.
To be fair, I think I can swallow this bitter bill because of the recent news that Terry Goodkind is writing another novel about Richard and Kahlan.
I have to admit that I never pictured Richard (Craig Horner) to be as young as he is portrayed in the show, but I know a lot of the female fans are happy about the choice. They did the same when casting for the female roles as well. I remember one episode that featured Kahlan (Bridget Regan) and Cara (Tabrett Bethell) and she asked me if I thought they were hot. My reply? “They ain’t ugly”.
At least now when the next round of books arrive I have a visual of what these characters look like. And in turn could lead to more people getting into the series.
I know this might offend some of the dedicated and loyal fans trying to keep the show on the air, but like all things in life, everything comes to an end. The best thing to do is to enjoy every chance that you can get while you have it – you never know when it’s going to be over. I hope I get to write a follow post on how he show was saved…
