Well, I was hoping to write up an amazing story of how it was fantastic to create my own race of aliens or craft my character in just about any shape I wanted, personalized in just about every type of polygon bliss available.
But my friends, it didn’t turn out that way.
I have to say that I was hesitant on learning about this game about getting it. I know World of Warcraft is tremendously successful and millions play it. I know that I’ve always have been a fan of the Star Trek franchise and the idea of playing an open world game in that universe was really cool. So without thinking too much more than that, I decided to pick up a copy.
As I placed the DVD rom into the drive and was prompted to go online and get started, I was hoping that this would be the experience I think a lot of us felt was missing from the previous games in the franchise. The screen prompted me for a username and such, and after about 1/2 hour of trying to create an account, I was finally able to fire up the game. So I thought.
After logging in, it told me that I needed activate my key. I was easily able to enter the randomized code provided that I know in 3 days will have some keygen crack ready to go on all the warez sites, and was hit with the whammy:
Please activate your subscription – select a billing option.
Let me get this straight – you want to get my credit info before I even play the friggin game? On the box it says it comes with a 30-day free trial. But apparently you have to provide all your credentials before they even let you see what you’re getting. But wait, I already paid $50 just to get the game, and before I can even create a character, you are hitting me up for more cash? REALLY?!
I could understand if somehow I could acquire some cool ships or exclusive content via download, return the game and screw someone else out of some goodies – but to not even let me test drive the game is absurd. And for the record, I don’t get any of this crap I review for free. I pay for all of it so I am coming from a ‘real’ person’s perspective, not some review site where I have to say good things to get a paycheck. Yes, I know that you enter your billing information now and they won’t bill you until 30 days from the date you join. It’s not about that – how do you expect to get me ‘hooked’ if I can’t even play your game? Since the experience requires me to go online to play, you can easily turn off access at any moment, if I don’t pay – so why not let me play for free?
Cryptic and Atari, you have an epic FAIL here. We all know the model works provided you have a good game. Perhaps it’s this type of thinking is what lead to the downfall of Atari previously. To be fair, since I haven’t gone in to play the game, I suppose the actual game play review can be handled by all the ‘big boys’ who get to beta test and provide glowing reviews on another turd of a game.
At least I was able to get my reserve for God of War 3 which comes out March 16th, 2010 and I guarantee right now will not suck balls.

I’ve never been into subscription games, as few of them hook me and the system of paying all that is bad. If you have all the WoW packs and have constantly played since it came out, you would have to pay in the region just under 10.000 NOK. That is a LOT, a single pay game of AAA grade on launch day is 600. Anyway, that Star Trek game is EVIL. You don’t go about charging people left and right before they’ve played the damn game. You just don’t do that.
admin, tell me where the publisher has it’s HQ. I’ll go there and kick their asses to hell before getting your money back.

Seriously? Can this even be considered a review. You are a ton of legitimate complaints and praises you could have made about this game but this is neither. It is naive to think that a modern MMO would not require a credit card. This has become standard practice.

@Dennis – I know it’s common practice, but while at the store, there were parents who did not know that on top of purchasing the game, there was an additional cost involved. I’m not arguing your point, but just trying to demonstrate that for the ‘typical’ user i.e. non-gamer, they have to pay out a ton of money.

wow this is a horrible review admin… I’ve played these types of games and know what to expect. I bought this game already with the knowledge that you wrote here about how you have to pay and do all of that. I am going to post the email I just sent you because it is a REAL REVIEW OF THE GAME. HERE IS A GOOD REVIEW:
I played star trek online last night and actually had a pretty good time. I noticed that in certain areas when your on foot and there’s a lot of people you get lagging. But that was probably because I was a million people were going through the exact areas I were for the very first time all at the same exact time since it came out yesterday. I’m thinking this will clear up later on. I played it until like 12:30 at night and was hooked. I had to shut off my computer and get to bed. I really liked the music and controlling my star ship through space. I flew it to space dock on earth and then spent some time customizing it. You can customize everything from the way all of your officers look to the way your bridge looks to the way you look. You even customize all of the different uniforms you wear and your crew wears.
As part of the story you actually get instructed to warp by pushing a button as you go through the tutorial beginning story. But now I can’t figure out how to go faster then full impluse and am stuck by earth lol. I want to engage that warp drive and start exploring now at this point. Either way it was a fun time and I can see were eventually it might get boring but there I guess going to be adding more systems and stuff through patches. and I’m sure as expansion packs come it will get good. I got a six month subscription and will use that as a testing period. you get a free 30 days for buying the game. I think its a good start to a star trek mmo and you have to start somewhere. Mostly these games aren’t great at first but get better as time goes on….

@admin – It says it on the box that the game only includes 30 days of play after which you need a subscription. I understand that some parents or non-gamers may not know this but it is on the box, cryptic can’t hold your hand. Also, if it was that big a deal and you didn’t want to pay for the extra time you could simply enter in the credit card number, sign up and immediately cancel the account. You would still get your 30 days free and not be charged another dime, unless you decided at a future date to keep playing. This article makes it sound like you have no choice but to pay extra if you want to play the game when that simply isn’t true.

@Dennis – Thanks for the reply. I understand where you and Expert are coming from – it’s like knowing that if you buy a car, you have to buy gas to drive it. I suppose I should’ve been more clear that the user experience in getting started was what I found to be cumbersome. As someone who sells a product, you want them to get online and get hooked. I know there are different schools of thought when it comes to how to remind people to pay for billing. Get them when they first join so they forget about it, or take a chance to bother them once they are 30 days into their trial. Either way it’s going to set off people in different ways.

The entire point of my post was that yes, I am trying to play the role of a parent or someone who doesn’t game very often or at all.
Yes, I’ve played MMORPG’s before! (WoW). Packaging? Nope, I don’t look. My PC has a ton of RAM and processing (not for gaming purposes, but I need a machine with lots of speed and power for all my work) , so I know it will have whatever is needed to play the game. I did get The Witcher which has f’d up my PC ever since I installed it – but that’s a different story. Anyways, my only point is that I have certain expectations as a user, and when they aren’t met, the entire experience becomes tainted.

That is quite fair.
Most parents never even read up on anything regarding a game their children ask for past the ESRD rating. If I am not mistaken, most MMORPGs state that a valid credit card is needed for additional monthly fees as well as internet access for online play.
I have known several people that have been enraged by the fact that they would have to pay such ridiculous monthly fees over the retail purchase price. A “30-day free trial period” is often misunderstood as a “you don’t need to play after that”, but these companies aren’t stupid. They want to set up the automated charge cycle before players get hooked on the addictive RPG elements.
As you mentioned the crack, I am sure you will be able to find free keys if you dig deep enough. If you dig even further, you might even find pre-paid card codes as well, but these will be meticulously hunted down and monitored by the company earning you a ban on the used account if not more.
The gamble is usually not worth it, in my opinion. These games are phenomenal, but you have to be willing to pay the price. I for one have stopped playing pay-to-play online games at this point in time. I get enough entertainment for free as it is without me spending $200 a year to play a character a measly 1-4 hours a week.

@Admin. I also understand where your coming from the parent side of things. I believe this is a good game though for a first crack at a star trek MMO world.
I would probably give this game a 7.0 for a rating out of 10. Just because it has a lot of cool things there are a lot of good things about it. But I still think there is a lot of room for improvement. A 7.0 for me is average and not great but I am also very hard on my ratings. I like the fact that you can order a life time subscription for around 300 dollars and I like a lot of things about the game. I will probably play it off and on for the next six months and then see where they are after that with all of the patches and everything plus future expansions that might be coming out by then….

I would say the game’s call to fame will be the space battles you can have with your ship and the exploration part of it. I believe the expansion packs will have a huge impact on this game as far as race creation goes and different classes that might get created in the future. I mean imagine being able to create your own civilization with its own empire/race with its own fleet. that would be crazy.

As for the A.F.K. punchline, its making a reference to the actual Star Trek MMO. The captain is a character. Its player has been away from keyboard while a game even triggered.

I think the article was a bit melodramatic, but I can see where you’re coming from Admin. WoW only has a 14 day trial, but the trial copies contain a full game disc (no expansions) and a 14 day free trial that you just enter the code into. For the longest time, I didn’t even have a credit card, and had I loaded up ST:O and found out the game needs a credit card to play, I would have been choked.
At any rate, I’ll probably pick it up when I’m done this semester of schooling. For now, I waste enough time as it is.

On another note I visited deep space 9 lastnight while I was exploring the deep space sector. I finally figured out how to use my warp engines. I also had to destroy 8 Klingon ships on my way there. My ship took a pounding but she held together after I diverted power to forward shields and averted a complete disaster….

anyway i am just as sceptical about kotor as i whas sceptical about STO.ive played STO online and all i can say about it is that the game works fine.space battles are actully very fun to play and i created my sub yesterday.ground battles are not as fun and yes it looks and feels kinda stuff.but even ground battles are fun if you do it in PVP.
sure STO is not a groundbreaking MMO and it will never be but i can assure you that kotor will have the same fate.kotor will be another good and finely tuned fun to play MMO but nothing special.

I’ve been reading up on what people actually think of the game, From the positive aspect to the negative reviews.
As many have said, Star Trek Online proved to be a success in its game models, Yet with the pre monthly pay just as you enter the game, It puts a dampener on the game.
And from what i’ve seen, Omega seems like a child who has been given a lolly pop and just wants to suck the joy out of it, Spamming like a fool and typing like an idiot.
