No recap this week, as I think this topic kinda trumps that…
I floated the question about having FactPilers posting matches and I think it’s time to clear some things up.
1.) This is NOT a “moderator” type role. There were some conversations talking about having 3 mods per battle and submitting matches based on what your strengths were. All this will do is give you the the ability to actually upload matches to the site thru a custom login that I create.
2.) I will still approve EVERY match before it gets posted. Currently, only 3 readers have the ability to publish their own posts.
3.) Everyone will start at the “contributor” level. This means you can go thru the process of creating everything for the match, you just can’t upload the image or any files.
4.) This is the time to prove yourself. I will not be letting certain people only do certain characters/universes. How can you expect to expand your knowledge of other great characters if you stick with only the ones you know? Getting outside your comfort zone is a great way to not only challenge yourself, but to learn new things.
5.) At the start, I will send you the matches to post. You will be responsible for correctly creating the post. THIS IS NOT AS EASY AS IT SOUNDS. I have crafted a “FactPile Style Guide” as to how every match has to look, and there are certain things that need to happen for every post that appears on FactPile.
6.) Only after I feel like I can rely on you to provide consistency will I upgrade you to “author” status which will let you publish to the site without me needing to approve it manually. This process might only take a few weeks for some people, while others it might take six months. And if it takes you that long, you’ll notice that you aren’t getting any matches sent your way.
7.) I know I am pretty laid back when it comes to making comments on the site, but when it comes to being reliable, paying attention to details and just wanting to do this, I am a prick about how certain things have to be presented. This site started out as nothing and has evolved tremendously because of the input of you readers, the willingness to adapt, but also knowing that every day, there are at least 2 new posts on FactPile. I will not sacrifice those core values.
8.) Once you go through some of my pre-determined matches, I will grant everyone who wants to do this a few matches of their own to suggest. In the style guide, I have my process for what battles get selected to be made. While I do expect the formatting and presentation to be identical from everyone, your personality can come out in the matches you post as well as what you post in the battle themselves.
9.) The ultimate goal is to have an organized way to getting matches we all want to see make it to the site.
10.) I will tell you right now that if I start hearing complaints about one person supposedly getting special treatment, or one person’s post suggestions are always going live, the person complaining will most likely get their abilities revoked. This will be a grind, and only those who want ti bad enough will make it through the other side.
11.) I know there are some more points I am missing right now, but as I think of them, they will be addressed in this post only. I’ll probably end up inserting emails into the comment section for this post for the benefit of all.
Okay, so now that the rules have been stated, let’s get this started.
If you want to sign up for this non-paid abuse by me, all you need to do is send me your email address and screen name you want to post under. I know most of you will pick what you already use for the site and that’s fine. Be sure your Gravatar is what you want, as it will be the image that gets posted in the “author” section. If you don’t have an image, I’ll most likely use my Master Chief Teabag gif in action over your screen name.
Send in your email to admin at factpile dot com. Be sure to tell me in the subject line that it’s related to wanting to post on FactPile. Also, feel free to include anything that you feel like you can offer.
I’m looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Does this mean you have to post 2 matches every day?
July 25, 2010
#2
What if you get sent your own match?
July 25, 2010
#3
lol – no. To start, I’ll most likely send you 5 matches requested by others for you to create. Once you achieve “Author” status, then you can submit your own matches.

I sent my applications. Can’t wait to try my hand on putting up matches. While I won’t be able to do much outside put them up and give my two thoughts on it.

@EnigmaJ – This is an experiment of sorts that is taking place now. If it becomes clear that it’s a bad idea, I can always go back make any changes needed.
@ Kenny C. – As I mentioned before, I will be watching all submissions very closely and throwing everyone who wants to do this thru the grinder. Look at Expert – as he stated, he’s had the ability for a while, and he could only hack out about 10 articles…

Is there a minimum amount of matchs that have to be approved?

“This is an experiment of sorts that is taking place now. If it becomes clear that it’s a bad idea, I can always go back make any changes needed.”
I got it. By the way, did you get my e-mail?

@overlord – do you mean in order to obtain the “Author” status?

Here’s what I mean. Let’s say person x signs up and you send him 5 requests. Does person x have to approve a certain number (like 2) every day?

@overlord – no. Here’s what is going to happen. I will send you matches that YOU need to generate – the images, scenario and anything else. You’ll then be able to login to the backend of the site and post the match. At that point in time I will see that match or matches that you’ve posted. If they are good to go from the start, it’ll go live when it fits into the rotation I have for posts. If it needs some changes, I’ll let you know what they are.
Make sense?

@Darkbladex96 – No worries, I am a hack when it comes to coding (as noted by the numerous times in FactPile history where I did something and the site would melt down, look funny or just not work at all). If you can use microsoft word, you can prolly do this.

” As I mentioned before, I will be watching all submissions very closely and throwing everyone who wants to do this thru the grinder. Look at Expert – as he stated, he’s had the ability for a while, and he could only hack out about 10 articles… ”
- That maybe so, but you’re asking for trouble along the lines of an active forum then – with the sheer amount of threads overwhelm this site and we’re looing at a front page that changes completely by the day. Not saying the current pace at the moment is excellent, but at least its steady and controled. While you have used your power in the past, you’re asking for a site that no longer has an sort of steady pace and simply becomes a mish-mash of periods of creativity and then lulls of utter boredom. Not saying we don’t have that already, but you’re going to effectivily increase the effects tremendously.
In other words – this is either going to help the site grow and an enormous rate, but go to fast with not enough people paying attention to all the new content, or an utterly lax collective group of authors that only has a select few posting, with the others quickly burning out.
And there’s always room for more errors and faults in this system your advocating, with you being overwhelming in a sense when you already have your attention taken up as it is now.
Just some concerns I have of course, you can literally do whatever you want on this site, but please…..this site appeals to me for a select few reasons over other debate sites. The one most concerned at the moment is the absolute centralized nature of the with you at the controls as a benevolent dictator that, in effect, will rule the whole time frame in which I’m concerned and listens to my concerns. You’re in effect asking that a grand council be appointed to better represent us and get more stuff posted and done, but think about this for a minute. We have had steady growth and had been able to self-regulate in terms of rules, pace, and debate with the way it is now. Matchs, what ifs, and other cool stuff is posted and then commented/posted/debated on – all at asteady pace with everything given the attention it deserves without something else stealing it away too quickly. You’re asking me for a scenario that could end in utter chaos, with matchs aglore spewing out at us and with no matchs being on the front page for that long – leading it to become part of the archives that much faster and quickly forgoten.
And quite frankly, I debate with these people. Mistakes and excesses are often made. While you’re mistakes are few and far between, and limited to that only you and a select few others post – you’re asking for that to be expanded to others. I’m not saying their stupid, I’m merely pointing out the fact of odds in this case – more posters – more mistakes – less time for you.
But I’ve ranted enough – do what you will.

While I’m not worried at all about the “quality” of the matches that will be put up ( since anyone who wants this privilege is going to be tested beforehand, and even afterwards, you could revoke their ability to do so with the touch of a button ), I share Kenny C.’s apprehension when it comes to the quantity.
I, for one, wouldn’t want to be greeted with 10 new topics every single day, even if they were the best topics I’d have ever seen. But I’m not worried, since as you said this is merely an experiment and you know what you’re doing. Though, for the “quantity issue” that some others have raised, I would suggest you somehow limit the number of matches an author could put up over the period of a few days.
For example, if at the end of all this, you give around 15 people author status, you could limit them to putting up just one topic per 5-8 days. In this way, only 2-3 matches on average would be making its way onto the site daily and the steadiness/stability of the site would be maintained.

Kenny C. and EnigmaJ does have a point.
I was worried about myself flooding the thing so I thought of doing one match per two or three weeks. But others may not have that same control in mind. Glad the testing will clear up the quality, but I think limiting the access to upload a match per week or two would fix that.

” Glad the testing will clear up the quality, but I think limiting the access to upload a match per week or two would fix that. ”
- then it becomes a race between posters at sunday night to get their match in….. I’m seeing even more problems now though.

@Kenny C.
I meant per person. Not overall.

Heh, we should choose a few people rather than let them upload matches at their leisure.
Umm, a schedule for them ?

#39
I got a bad feeling about this…. But if it works than good…. Also silly question will the battle request still work those who don’t want to be authors or don’t want to be brothered with uploading pics and such and just want to request matches…. Will people still be able to request matches in the same manner we have been doing it or will everything change now.
July 25, 2010

“The times they are a changing” by Bob Dylan sounds suitable for this topic, but it is very possible that not everything will change, but most will change.
More pointless(sometimes) MC battles will occur.
More piontless(sometimes) Dante battles will occur.
Other than that, most will be fine.

” Two posts…. per author? Then my problem still exists. Two posts per the whole group….. still seeing problem.”
The admin didn’t say how he was going to limit it to two posts per day; he just said he would. Though you do bring up a point, which is why I like my idea, in which a sort of a “cool-down” time is applied to each and every author. Once an author posts a topic, that specific author won’t be able to post another one for another week or so– limiting both the traffic and the competition between authors to a bare minimum.

Will there be a limit to the number of Pilers having the ability to post?
July 26, 2010
#55
Besides getting posting abilities, all who qualify will follow the posting schedule as mandated by what makes sense for the site. I’m sure there will be days where we might get more than 2 posts, but those other posts will most likely be things for the Gallery section, a video game trailer or some other news like item.
July 26, 2010
#56
@Cargo – All Pilers who get to post will need to follow the posting schedule. Failure to do so means they are removed from being able to post.
