Pirates Vs Spartans
Pirates Vs Spartans

For this match there are a few elements that need to be considered before deciding. I think we would all agree that the Spartans easily win a group battle. But, take this fight to water, and have the pirates boarding a Spartan vessel, and that might even out the odds.

Also, consider how a one against one fight would go. Sure the Spartan might be better trained, but a pirate might just decide to use a gun at the sword fight…

Who wins?

A Spartan warrior is trained from the age of 7 to be a killing machine for the citystate of Sparta. A “golden age” pirate wouldn’t stand a chance. One must account for the pirate’s weapon, a flintlock pistol could possibly easily pierce the bronze and iron armor of a Spartan but when a spear, sword or battle axe one needs to account for inaccuracy and for how many Spartans are attacking one “Blackbeard”. A Spartan spear could easily pierce a pirate’s garb and flesh, flaying organs such as the heart, liver, lung and so forth easily.

If it was 20th century pirates, I guess they could flay the Spartans with ease but I have a lack of understanding why admin would shift the time turning a plausible battle into a pending FactPile award for the pirate side. No disrespect, admin, but could you explain your action here?

I’m not really sure about this one. You are comparing two different periods of history to another.
Heck, this matchup is what you see in Deadliest warrior, except the Spartan killed the ninja, and the pirate killed the knight. I’m not even sure about the credibility of the show, as entertaining as it is. Whatever the case, this match seems apples and oranges to me.

One just has to wonder what effect grape shot circa upto the 19th century

If it’s a sea battle forget it. Spartans didn’t do navy, they left that for the Athenians.

There have been many recorded cases in which a man has been shot and kept fighting. Considering the accuracy of a flintlock pistol, I’d say it’s an even bet weather or not the shot actually kills him.

I agree with the fact, that there has been instances in which a person has been able to keep on fighting with a projectile in their body. Usually, it was within one of the limbs (meaning not a mortal wound into the head or center of the chest). Unfortunately for the Spartans, we are not using the “golden age” pirate. Instead, Admin has chosen to use pre-WWI era pirates. I am not a master of ballistics and won’t pretend to know the different rifles and what not, the pirates used. All I can say, is that I am pretty sure by the early 1900s, accuracy with a rifle has surpassed greatly the flint-lock pistol. Plus, you get greater velocity with the 1900-era bullets, which means greater damage against the Spartans.

we should forget the psychological effect these weapons, will have on the spartans
as well, since they would most likely be highly religous and could only understand
firearms of this sort as magic of gods or wizards.

We already know that spartans win against golden era pirates (dunno if we eventually agreed, but I threw in more arguments so i consider myself justified to say the spartans won) but these guys are from the friggin’ 1900s. That means a single noob with a gun and some extra bullets stands a good chance of eliminating extreme amounts of spartans before they bring him down. Make it a group fight and give the pirates a machine gun and it’s settled.

    This fight is over.

20th century Pirates? Come on Admin, that killed it. No matter how experienced these Spartans are, and no matter how many of them there are, they don’t stand a chance against the pirates. Make it the entire Greek area, or the Persians, and those pirates are going down. But wood doesn’t stand up to guns. It’s one-sided.

Wait, do you mean we should not forget the psychological effects of fire arms on the Spartans? If not, then I would have to disagree with you mate, as seeing their comrades being taken down by rapid “fire-sticks” would have a huge influence on the Spartans morale.

Oh, and for the general public, if you wish to understand more of the Spartans, I would suggest reading Steven Pressfield’s “Gates of Fire”. It is quite a great book, and very good storyline. Think of it as the historical version of 300, but with some fictional characters.
