Well who could see this one coming, eh? I think this battle breaks down a few different ways. If you want to base it on arcade success, I think Street Fighter wins the match. If you want to decide based on the overall success of the franchise, I think Mk takes the battle. But, if you are matching all the characters against each other in a brawl-style fight, I think Soul Calibur has the most powerful universe.
So, given all that, which franchise will win this fight?

I’m fan of all of them but i prefer Soul Calibur. so i’ll go with them. and i’ll quote admin: “if you are matching all the characters against each other in a brawl-style fight, I think Soul Calibur has the most powerful universe.” I mean look at Nightmare, Abyss, Algol, Night Terror, Siegfried or Mitsurugi, to name a few. Not saying, though, that the other franchises will bring some pretty heavy players themselves.

Well, I wouldn’t be so sure of Soul Calibur coming out on top of the battling stakes.
Street fighter and Mortal Kombat do come with far more ranged firepower, plus the inherent technological advantages of MK (Cyrax, Sektor, Mecha Smoke, Jax, and Stryker to a lesser extent)
Mortal Kombat has the likes of Motaro, Shang Tsung, Shao Khan, Shinook, Smoke, Noob Saibot, Kintaro, Goro, These guys are massively hard hitters, as of the latest incarnations most of them have some sort of weapon to counter the Soul Calibur lot’s armaments. Scorpion is powerful as all hell, sub zero and the other pallet swap ninja’s are no slouches in that area, Raiden, even when he’s mortal, is still a master of lightning control… and can teleport.
Street fighter has fewer examples of that level of power, but Garuda, Akuma, Ryu and M.Bison spring to mind almost immediately as people you never count of a fight. Not to mention, again, the technological advantages of people like D.Dark.
Soul caliber actually has one of the less impressive shows of force in this list. The Titular sword and its counterpart would cause untold mayhem in the other universes, but its wielders, not so much.
If it comes down to which is the better game, I’m obliged to stick with my standard stance. Bushido blade is and will always be better than the lot of them!

This is a hard one
Street Fighter
Was the first great fighting game out there. With great 2d action and great selection of characters and also it was the most revolutionary game at the time.
Mortal Kombat
Was the most controversial of the three. However because of games like Mortal Kombat were you get to kill the other fighter helped in the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board or ESRB as we know it as. Because of this game video games now have rating system like movies do.
Soul Calibur
Was the first fighting game where both fighters use weapon base combat and not just hand to hand combat like the other fighting games have.
All three games have made an impact in gaming culture. So declearing a winner in this battle is hard to impossible.

I’d have to go with Soul Calibur, I mean Yoshimitsu is too badass and well as much as I like Cyrax MK is average compared to SC…as for Street Fighter, all the characters seemed really generic and the gameplay never impressed me

im thinking mortal combat will win in a fight between these other 2
personally i think SF is the first to go
and i really dont know what soul calibur has that is better than anything in mortal kombat other than the swords….not saying that they arent good just that mk has a fighter equally skilled
but what decided it for me was that fatalities are an actual attack and could be brought out at any time to devestate the enemy
because when characters have the ability to drop people into hell or summon giant skeleton hands out of the ground they have a big edge

If we invoke the guest stars, then this match becomes very messy.
Mortal Kombat Versus DC, Streetfighter/Capcom versus Marvel.
Guest star allowances means that SC is royally kicked out of the race here folks.
And sadly the match becomes far less about the respective series and more about the guest stars involved.
Superman/Green Lantern versus Blackheart/Apocalypse/hulk versus Darth Vader/Kratos/Yoda/Starkiller for example. All of these guys are leaps and bounds above the basic and even super-powered basic line up.
Admins word is law, so next match, lets try to keep it all about the guys created by the games themselves, rather than bonus characters

“yes, all “guest” characters for each series. – Admin”
Well, that makes things…. interesting. Kratos vs. Flash, Nightmare vs. Green Lantern, Spawn vs. Wonder Woman, Darth Vader vs. Darkseid, Algol vs. Superman?
Heck, with all Guest Characters included, Street Fighter is boned. Superman or Kratos could level their entire roster in one go. But what makes it interesting is the fact that Mortal Kombat vs. DC is a Mortal Kombat game, meaning that the following DC characters are involved:
Batman
Superman
Catwoman
Green Lantern
The Joker
Shazam
The Flash
Wonder Woman
Deathstroke
Lex Luthor
Darkseid
And for Soul Calibur we have
Link
Spawn
Heiachi Mishima
Kratos
Darth Vader
Yoda
Galen Marek (Starkiller)
Believe it or not, I think Superman, for once, is a major underdog here. The fact that magic affects him like it would any normal human means that Soul Edge, Soul Calibur or any other enchanted weapon from the Soul Calibur games would cleave him in two and steal his soul just like anyone else.
“Soul caliber actually has one of the less impressive shows of force in this list. The Titular sword and its counterpart would cause untold mayhem in the other universes, but its wielders, not so much.”
You are vastly underestimating the Soul Calibur roster.
Abyss: So we have Zasalamel discovering reincarnation. He get’s bored of life, and becomes hellbent on committing suicide. After exhausting all options, he decides that the only way he can actually truly end his life is by tapping into the power of both Soul Calibur and Soul Edge simultaneously. He orchestrates a final showdown between the two Spirit Swords and when they’re energies reach their zenith, he opens a portal to the Abyss and absorbs all energy from the surrounding area. His spell went ary however, and he fuses with the abyssportal and the absorbed energies, mutating him into Abyss. He would be more then a match for almost anyone from the standard Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat franchises.
Night Terror: In an alternate universe, the above mentioned spell fused with Nightmare, rather then Zasalamel. See under normal circumstances Soul Edge requires a human host. But Zasalamel reanimated the armor Siegfried once wore as Nightmare and infused it with the spirit of Soul Edge. So now Soul Edge doesn’t require a host. Soul Calibur was also, originally a piece of Soul Edge. So with Soul Calibur and Soul Edge reunited as one whole, unbound by the limitations of a human host, this thing is power incarnate. Night Terror is quite possibly one of the most powerful beings in this entire match. Ironically, this helped Zaslamel achieve his goal, because once Night Terror came into existence, he turned around and utterly obliterated Zasalamel, reincarnation and all.
Algol: So the Soul Calibur creators sat down and said “Hey, let’s come up with the most powerful Soul Calibur character ever!”. The result was Algol. He is from a culture thousands of years ago that has long been forgotten. He acquired Soul Edge, but so powerful of will is he that he literaly broke the Sword’s will and forced it to submit to him. That feat alone is more then anyone else in this entire match would be capable of. He then used it to conquer the world. Since Soul Edge is what it is, it managed to corrupt his son, who took Soul Edge and tried to kill his father with it. Naturally, Algol being as bad ass as he was, accidentally killed his son while fighting him (did I mention his son was wielding Soul Edge at the time?). But Algol realized his mistake. So in order to avoid this ever happening agian, and to preserve his own existance, he used his untold power to craft a shard of Soul Edge into a pure, holy sword. Creating Soul Calibur, however, took his life. But, being Algol and all, death wasn’t really much to him. Having been infused with the power of both Soul Calibur and Soul Edge, he clawed his way back into the physical realm and used his titanic power to raise a haven for him to exist in. By sheer force of will he created the tower of Remembrance.
Not to mention that Nightmare is powerful enough to demolish armies and only a select few in the entire world can even hope to challenge him. The sheer power unleashed when Siegfried and Nightmare clashed opened a dimensional rift. These two alone would be able to demolish most of the MK roster.
Oh, and Soul Calibur does have ‘Critical Finishes’ which are like more badass Fatalities.

Skrunks, you’re forgetting the ever popular X-Men versus Street Fighter/Marvel versus Capcom games. Blackheart, Magneto, Thanos, Apocalypse, Hulk… hell, Magneto alone would have a field day with all the armour wearing, metal weapon wielding heros of soul calibur.
With guest characters invoked, I’d have to say Street Fighter.
Without them , Mortal Kombat victory all the way (Though Soul Calibur makes a good show of force, ultimately Mortal Kombat brings far too many elder Gods into the mix to lose)
And if we’re talking commecial Success, its Street fighters victory.
Gameplay wise, personal Opinion, Soul Calibur is the much better system.

“Marvel versus Capcom games.”
Overkill
I am pretty sure the likes of magneto, thanos(IIRC he had the IG in MvC 2)Juggernaut,the hulk, and some other powerhouses.
Although,MK has superman,captain marvel,the flash,and GL,these will be the heavy hitters.
Don’t forget that the have THE GODDAMN BATMAN!
I have no doubts batman would wtfroflstomp nightmare and control the souledge for his own.
Nightmare:Thats impossible i can’t lose to you!How can it be?
Batman:What are you dense? Are you retarded or something!?Who the hell do you think i am?
I’m the goddamn batman.

@Skrunks- Well not quite boned because since this includes all characters a street fighter character has ever fought that means the get The Hulk, Jugernaut, Strider Hyryu, Jin, Mega Man, Thor, Onslaught, Cyber Akuma, Apocalypse, and many other heavy hitting Marvel, Capcom, and SNK fighters.

It’s characters are powerful and many have use of magic. Also the fact that the characters are armed with weapons gives them a big advantage. Algol vs Raiden i would like to see.

“It’s characters are powerful and many have use of magic. Also the fact that the characters are armed with weapons gives them a big advantage. Algol vs Raiden i would like to see.”
…Have the use of magic? As opposed to the other two series?
Use weapons? Like the entire Mortal Kombat cast in games like MK: deception and Shaolin Monks?
“Well, if we wana bring Gods into this, Soul Calibur does have the entire Greek Pantheon.”
The Mk ones are playable Gods
however, i’d argue the extra dimensional guardians of the various realms, each capable of creating portals, controlling the elements and stealing the powers from others of thier kind would have more effect on this match than the Greek panthenon in SC, who are, since the days of Soul Blade, acting entirely through avatars and with indirect aid to combatants.

It could also be argued that the Greek Pantheon hasn’t acted directly because no other Gods have acted directly.
Plus they got Kratos, you know, the guy who kills Gods for the hell of it.

Spawn pulls his cape over Hulk/Thanos and its all over.
3 of the most powerful being from the Starwars universe, The God of War, the Hero of Time and the General of Hell. I’m thinking they’d pack a punch.

Now, we could arguabley included them in the SC background, along with necrid, because they were all shoe-horned into the story and, technically at least, are valid Soul Calibur fighters.
But again, if we include them, we include people like Magneto, and he would have a field day with that line up. Vader and Krato especially.

“I understand that Soul Edge has the power to kill gods but it was still cowardly of Ares to flee from it when so many mortal characters dare to hunt it down and face up to it.”
Its quite a popular storyline really. Immortals fear death more than mortals, because to them its not an inevitability. There is no eternal afterlife for them, no reward. Their one life is all they have, and whilst nothing in it can scare them, the chance to lose it can make even the most foolhardy quake with fear.
On topic, with guest fighters, street fighter takes this without breaking a sweat.

Man, if we’re including guest stars, we got the Darkstalkers, Marvel, Final Fight, Rival Schools, Megaman (Classic and Legends), Tatsunoko most recently, and countless others teaming up and facing Street Fighter. Add up Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat including guest stars and you still have Street Fighter outnumbering them 3 to 1.
But not including guest stars, I still give it to Street Fighter. Gill’s ability to fully heal after being defeated and Seth’s Black Hole Ultra Move are frikkin harder to beat then any MK or SC final boss.

I wonder if thats what the Romans thought at Cannae before 80,000 of their troops were surrounded and defeated by Hannibal’s forces numbering in around 50,000. In short numbers doesn’t automatically give someone victory.

The exception does not ignore the rule.
Generally speaking, greater numbers equals a greater chance of victory. Its still not a certainty, but its at the very least an increased chance.

What about character creation? I mean Mortal Kombat & Soul Calibur has them, & I can make Ryu Hyabusa, Dr. Manhattan, The Hulk, BRUCE LEE & CHUCK NORRIS!!!!!
Though their not on the list, I would go with Tekken, especially Tekken 6. But from the list, I would go with Mortal Kombat because they have more characters + you can create more, gigantic bosses who are also the cheapest evar!!! I mean you have Shaolin Monks, Soldiers, Cyborgs, Ninjas, Sorcerors, Samurais, “Avatar” like people, Vampires, Centaurs, 4-armed Shokan Beasts, Undead Zombies, Beef, a juiced up Emperor, a Dragon King, and a giant Lava Beast…!!!! + every character has special skills like projectiles or fire balls or lightning or super strength… + every characer (except 4 da bosses) have weapons. I’m giving the edge to Mortal Kombat!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( Mortal Kombat theme song being played…)

Lets say yes, but only in the confines of what they had in the respective games.
So Link for example, gets his sword, his bow and his bombs, but not his four-links sword, the fierce deity mask or anything he had in his games that didn’t appear in the Soul Caliber game.
Superman would be limited to what he shows in Mortal Kombat versus DC
etc etc.

I like Jwlynas’ suggestion of limiting guest characters to their in-game forms. This prevents curbstomps from happening due to a guest character’s home canon’s events, and generally makes the debate more interesting as it can no longer be summed up as “the Hulk gets anrgy… the end.”

soulcalibur ppl generally have very little magic compared to mortal kombat. i dont think it would be fair to count the elder gods or teh emperor of mk universe lol, but u still ahve raiden an teh sorcerers etc. (btw raiden gave up his godship) anyhow, street fighter ppl
pretty much are about close combat an no hadouken can handle a friggin electric storm from raiden or pretty much any mk spell, eg ryu uses hadouken, (name i forgot goes here) blocks it, summons two skeletons an then summons a friggin skeleton ahnd out fo the ground to separate ryus scrotum from his body. FATALITY. soulcalibur should b even against streetfighter i think, but mk ahs technology and magic on their side much more powerful than either franchise.
in summary = FATALITY
