Halo 3 ODST Review
Halo 3 ODST Review

Like a few on this site, I’m sure some of you were outside a GameStop or some other video game retailer last night waiting for Halo 3 ODST. I have to say that this time there were more people in line compared to the release of Halo Wars. Last night there were about 40 of us waiting for our copy.

Some interesting observations about the people standing in line:

One guy had a Hummer with a flat-screen hooked up and there was a group of people playing Halo 3 (much in the same fashion as when it was released, ‘cept that night, they were playing Halo 2).

Imagine this – there were actually women standing in line, and no, they weren’t the mothers. In total there might have been about 5 of them, and only one was a GF of a customer.

But enough about the crowd, lets get to the game.

Since I got the collector’s edition, the first thing I did was enter in the code for Sargent Johnson. Cool. Now he’s available in “firefight” mode which is ok I guess.

So, I crack open the cd and there are two discs inside. One labled “Campaign” and the other was “Multi-Player” (OR was it “Online”? I can’t remember).

First one I checked out was the campaign since it was probably the best chance of getting played. (The primary reason I got the game was for the new maps – more on that later). I always let the cd fire up and let it run through the intro clip just to see what they do. Nothing impressive here, just a bunch of clouds and text.

Once I get to the start screen, instead of playing, I chose to download the video, hoping it would provide some edge to the gameplay. After watching it, all it does is provide a ‘lil bit of backstory to build up the drama.

Next, I chose the Firefight option and picked an open map to play. I tried to find the “Play as Sargent Johnson” Option but was nowhere to be found. To be fair, I didn’t try too hard looking for it.

The game starts and I’m running around the map trying to find some weapons. Eventually I make it to the center of the map and the Covenant arrive. The gameplay was ok, the Pistol is just blazingly AWESOME, Bungie should upgrade that immediately into Halo 3…

As I’m running around killing grunts, one cool feature I liked is how your medals appear to the right side of your visor with a slightly slanted display. By trying to keep the player immersed in the environment by including the “In-Game” stats is a great idea.

After making it through 2 waves, on the third a Wraith gets dropped and all my weapons are out of ammo. I finally die and they tell me I have 5 lives left. At that point I just quit – it’s just like a campaign gauntlet without other people playing…

Now to the campaign. I think I now know why Bungie has never shown Master Chief’s face – they absolutely SUCK BALLS at making a human face look anything like a real person. I just don’t get it – everything else – the textures, mapping, lighting, gameplay, balance is great – but all the faces just look like total ASS. So my friends, that’s the real reason why Bunige won’t reveal his face – at least until they can hire someone who’s good at it. (I can’t imagine it would be that hard to find a few 3D artists that could do the job).

As the “Roookie” you crash land in New Mombasa and begin your journey. When you activate the special display in the visor, I can’t imagine any other way of playing the game – why would you? It’s much cooler to see the enemies outlined in red and everything else in gold. I only played it through a few checkpoints before saving to go online…

Now to what I really wanted to see – the new maps for Halo 3. In the past just about everytime they released their packs, there was always a map I didn’t like. this time was different. Heretic is an updated version of “Midship” from Halo 2. While it’s never been a favorite of mine, it does offer balanced gameplay and I was glad to find that some of my old spots are still accessible with some timely jumping.

“Citadel” looks like it will be a fun map to play. Great sniper spots, tons of jumping areas and hiding spots as well as obvious hot spots on the map that will have many players watching the re-spawn timer.

Then we get to “Longshore”. This is easily my favorite map of the new ones released and for a player of my style, this map suits me great. What seals the deal is the whole “Fish Tacos” love Bungie shows for the map. The map feels huge with plenty of ways to get to the flag or arm the bomb for objective games, and will offer plenty of places for snipers to get their targets.

Finally, I went online to see if I could get some of the new maps to appear. While that never happened for the 7 games I played, I did enjoy the “Throwback” game settings. This set of games seems to have all the old gametypes available on a more frequent basis. While I enjoyed an easy victory in the first match, the second one absolutely sucked as my entire team quit on me and I was left to try to defend the flag against 4 others. So, my question to Bungie is, I get penalized if I quit, why should I lose a rank when it’s obvious that 1 player vs 4 others has no chance of winning – shouldn’t that player at least keep their previous rank? If i’m going to go down anyways, I’ll just quit everytime it looks like I’ll lose anyways.

Rant over.

So, how would I rate Halo 3 ODST? For the game itself which I haven’t played very much, I would say a 7/10. For the firefight mode, I’ll give that a 7/10 too.

I’ll be picking up my copy after work today. I purchased the full collectors addition which was reserved so I’ll have Sgt Johnson. This entire game is purely developed in order to cash in on a pre-existing game and people who want a armor that only a few select people now have. Its a good marketing idea and I guess it works. I’m guess the game will be fun but I’ll probably only play it for a bit then go right back to Halo 3.

On a side note this entire xbox live money making crap is getting a little out of hand.
Now instead of me purchasing a few game for 60 dollars I know am forced to pay close to 90 dollars over the course of time to actually own the entire game I should have gotten in the first place. Case and point Halo. After buying all of the additional maps I probably have well over 100 dollars invested into the game itself and now to get the final 3 maps I have to invest another 100 dollars.

This is all great for the companies doing the selling but people are kind of getting rob now days and don’t even realize it. There even taken maps you already had for halo 2 and repackaging them just for you to buy them again.

Now I’m just bringing this point up but I’m buying ODST and I’m sure I’ll like it but it’s something that is kind of already starting to get out of hand.

hang on how much is 60$$$ in good ol’ English sterling??? It sounds alot-way to much for a game either way…
@sapper, yeah too big if you ask me. really all they have to do is say “its another crapping halo game” and it would sell millions. and I dont mean that in a good way.

I played this lastnight and I really enjoyed it. It’s actually pretty fun to play. and a decent add on. Probably should have been like 30 bucks though but I guess your paying more because its halo and Microsoft.

I have an interesting theory. If bungie gets the shaft just like the company that made Halo Wars does, There are companies that are looking for great talent. Considering that Microsoft shafted them who do they go to to stick it to the man? Sony. Thats when a halo-centric game comes to the playstation brand.

  • Megaraptor18

The in this world anything can happen. I bet you Sony would kill to get Bungie just so they can use them against Microsoft

It will because of that rivalry if Sony gets the chance to get Bungie and Halo they will pay any amount for it get to tick off Microsoft.

I don ‘t get it was the collecter’s editon the only one that came with the second disk? Because I got Johnson(Pre-ordered) and all the maps. So will they not keep the game like that? Wiil it go just to campagin? It is awesome.

Its funny how now PS3 fans are coming up with if Bungie goes over to Sony and makes games (Halo like or not). Wheres all this Halo sucks?

Naw im just joking =P Or am i?

Anyway, i got halo ODST just a while ago.

Played around 2 and a half hours of Campaign and 1 hour and 30 minutes of Firefight.

Campaign: Awsome, i have to disagree with admin and say the faces werent ‘Terrible’ but still werent that great. I love how it was told, and at first i utterly hated the pistol (Seemed to weak to me) but after playing for a while learned to love it.

I wasent to fond of playing the rookie and having to run around New Mombasa all the time, i prefered playing the other guys. You know, becouse they dont have to run around looking for evidence for whatever. They actually get to fight alot instead of the random encounter.

Firefight: Loved it, made ODST worth it the most, made it it Set 3 Round 3 Wave 5 before me My brother and a friend of mine lost. Got rushed by like 2 chieftains when we wehre out of lives.

We only played one game since it took so long, i really see me playing this game more =P

    Is this really worth $60?

That is a lot for a game that mostly uses the same weapons and enemies.
The online is nearly identical to the original no? The campaign is obviously new but how long does it last? I’d hope at least 20 hrs for $60…

    “@swifter,
I never said halo sucks. I just said that games on the ps3 are better.”

Never directed it at you =P

    “@ swifter

Oh! Draco made you look da fool!”

    Really were?

    “Is this really worth $60?”

In my opinion, only if your already a halo fan.

“That is a lot for a game that mostly uses the same weapons and enemies.”

I can assure you brutes are no longer a walk in the park. Running up and meleeing them is not an option anymore (If your sane atleast). A pack of three Minors and a Captain brute would be impossible to kill in up close inless you had like a gravity hammer or a shotgun.

That and i swear every chieftain i have fought (Or atleast on Firefight) Carries an invincibility it gets annoying -.-

“The online is nearly identical to the original no?”

The online IS the original, all they did was throw Halo 3 multiplayer on a disk as far as i know.

“The campaign is obviously new but how long does it last? I’d hope at least 20 hrs for $60…”

Not 20 Hous, but i swear it will feel like that. In a bad walking around sort of way. While the walking around isnt *Bad* it does get slightly irritating when all you want to do is finish the game not have fun.

And firefight is a big thing for it, i really enjoyed it and i only played one level.

“I really do enjoy Halo, I just like Warhawk, Killzone, genji and others more.”

    No kidding?

Halo would never go to playstation.343 industries controls halo now and not bungie anymore.Sorry but halo remains at microsoft.

I have never heard of sony franchises that became famous like halo.Killzone doesn’t even has any novels.

Halo remains with microsoft and i hope that no halo game will ever come to playstation. But halo legends is the first halo product on a playstation.

@BOBCAT405 – You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, just as I am with mine. FactPile doesn’t do the “typical” review – it’s only one person’s perspective based on their expectations and experiences with the game. We always encourage the readers to play the games themselves and not to rely on one person’s comments about the title being reviewed.

I invite you to read through more of the site and add your thoughts.
