Dragon Age: Origins Review
Dragon Age Origins

No, you didn’t get here by accident, this is perhaps the only review you’ll need to read if you want to get a feel for the Dragon Age game.

BioWare got a ton of exposure for this game because of their success with the Baldur’s Gate series that was great for the PC. Now, they have taken that experience and created a new world that has the potential to become something epic.

Problem is, they fell short by not making this game an online multi-player experience. So, instead of forming a party with someone who excels with spells and a tank who can withstand a ton of punishment online, we’re all left to these experiences on our own.

If you’re a fan of RPG, then you’ll find this game to be a nice way to pass time, but I doubt many will go back and replay the game after the closing credits roll. Unlike Fable 2 where the replay value is fun and worthwhile, the micro-managing of the battles and AI characters take away from the enjoyment of the game for most gamers. I know there are some of you who enjoy that element, and you’ll have a great time at it.

But for the rest of us who want to jump into the action and enjoy the surroundings of the game and have fun doing so aren’t going to get that. While I like the idea of not telling you everything you need to do in order to beat the game, a mapping system or at least tell me where I need to go would be nice. Make it optional if you want, but you need to have it!

On it’s own the game won’t become a classic despite all the attempts it’s trying to make. But, if BioWare is setting us up for more chapters down the road, and provides better gameplay, we might look back and realize this game was essential in building the foundation of a great franchise.

Here’s what most prolly want to see – a scene with an elf chick and woman making out:

And here is a great review from Zero Punctuation:

Overall rating: 5/10 – Wait for it in the used section to buy.

Preordered it already, and frankly it still sounds like my kind of game. that and I get Masse effect 2 stuff with the preorder so… yeah.

    Still, a timely review indeed!

Picked up my collectors edition copy today and frankly, I can’t wait to get started. I’ve been itching for a new RPG and while the lack of multiplayer is a little disappointing, it still seems like something I’ll enjoy. Plus, with the collectors edition, I have a cloth world map and the soundtrack as well as some other nifty features. Gonna have fun with this one!

Umm…I don’t know if I read it wrong in the review, but it does tell you what to do. Make an army. Bam. And there is a map. Maybe I’m reading this to simply. The beauty of the game is that you DON’T have a set path you have to take. I did mine one way and my friend did hers another. I’ve been playing this game non-stop since I got it. I say, who needs multiplayer anyway? I don’t. It would just ruin my friendships with my friends when they didn’t cast the spell I wanted them to. And I’ve already started another character to play through again. I’m going through all the beginning stories. That’s what I like about it. Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but it’s just my opinion. I say this game is definitely worth getting.

@Emily – Thanks for your thoughts, I’m glad you enjoy the game. We all have our likes and dis-likes and that’s what makes all of this interesting. My only issue is that the AI can only do so much before you can predict how it will make a creature react to what you do.

Compare that to playing online – you don’t know if that fighter is going to charge, defend their ground, try to outflank you, retreat, call for back -ups, etc. To me, that is what makes a game challenging after I’ve beaten the game – otherwise, once I’ve done that, why is there any other reason to play?

Actually im extremely happy that its not a MMORPG.
My problem with MMORPG is that there are few, if any roleplaying elements. You choices (if you even get any) doesn’t really affect the world, the outcome of the story or anything at all.
In the end it comes down to what to wear, what spell or ability to use and thats that. (very occasional you choose faction, like sith/jedi, elves/orcs).

In singleplayer RPG’s its all about choices. Do you let the traitor live, let him go or kill him. Do you support one faction or another. Do you help the trader or rob him and so on. This game got many and interesting choices, where your character will either directly or indirectly affect the world around him.

The tactical aspect of this game i’m not so happy with either. While i think that the game continue to be somewhat challenging, as long as you stay away from AI exploits and the OP spellcombo, it eventually becomes tedious. I like it when theres a chance of dieing in every fight, but i dislike the fact that there’s som many of them.
Having to fight 2 warriors, 2 archers and a mage 20 times before reaching the boss is tedious and unecessary, and i would have preffered if it was 2 or 3 fights or to be able to breeze through them.

On a last note, this is an instant classic. Sure it has it’s faults, and it isn’t a perfect game. But its one of a handful real fantasy roleplaying games to enter the market in a long time.

Other fantasy RPG’s since BG2 in 2000: Arcanum (from 2001) Neverwinternights 2, Fable 2 and The Witcer. Other RPG’s Mass Effect, Kotor (1+2), Vampires and Fallout 3.
And then of course there are action RPG’s, which generally doesn’t include choices, and got little in common with the mentioned titles, or DA:O,

Arcanum is quite old, NWN 2 is generally considered to be pretty bad RPG wise.
Fable 2, isn’t that much about the choices according to the reviews i’ve read.
The witcher, was not tactical at all, and it’s therefore strictly speaking an action-rpg. Even though the witcher was bug-ridden, laggy, load times were huge, the visuals where worse than could be expected and the fighting was tedious, it is still by many considered to be the best fantasy RPG since BG2, mostly because there isn’t much competition.

@Felix42 – I’ve played Fable 2 and enjoyed it – despite the flaws it has for it’s co-op online (you didn’t import your character, instead you chose a character type to play with similar powers to the host), it still has a great replay value. Plus, with a connection to Fable 3 based on what you did in Fable 2 is very interesting to me.

My hope is that DOA does the same thing but let us go online and see what others have done – imagine all the possible variants of the world exist? Now that would certainly keep my interest and overlook the flaws of the game.

The best thing about this game has to be the setting and atmosphere. It really gives the feel of a dark, gritty, medieval fantasy realm, and the blood effects really underscore all that. It’s my sort of realm. It is insanely awesome to me to picture the events of fantasy epics like the Wheel of Time or Inheritance taking place in a environment like this.

The only real problem, besides having a mute protagonist like Link, is that the combat involves the ridiculous “oh, I’m swinging my sword at you from a foot away, but I failed my dexterity check, so I missed!” It reminds me unpleasantly of the mindless hack-and-slash combat in Morrowind.

Playing this right now, I’m greatly impressed on the story condensation of this game, thanks to Bioware that they are truly dedicated in making great games with great stories. It’s like a game and a novel blended together to make players with interest in stories to be gamers and readers at the same time. Well, I’d rather play RPG games with epic story endings than Online games that are inconclusive and full of stratification among players(hardcore gamers with guilds always win).

I disagree completely with this review.

The game gives just enough information for quests, side-quests, and exploration (in the form of the codex and found items) to make the main routes obvious but the extra goodies a bit challenging to come by. If there was a “mapping system” or more linear directions the game would be less of an experience, it would be a dumbed down “Go to point A on your map and kill X number of darkspawn” type of game.

Also, with the variety of possible origins and endings, different choices and companion stories, the replayability is quite good.

The fun of the game is figuring things out, following the story, and in my opinion the fact that it is singleplayer. Great singleplayer RPGs are few and far between, not every game needs multiplayer- this game would lose much of it’s true role-playing appeal if more players were involved. BioWare knows what they are doing, keep it up!

The last RPG I fell in love with was KotOR and that’s becoming a MMO (which should be awesome). Dragon Age should follow the same path- get a couple of good singleplayer games under it’s belt and then break-through into multiplayer (I would prefer non-massive for this game).

Okay the only problem that i find with such a game is that the story line makes it seem like your suppose to follow it to make the movie even though you do get your choices it seems that those big choices dont mean much in the end battle like the whole thing is just to level up to fight the archdemon.

In playing this game with a low grade game card in my comp i still beat the game in less than a week, for a truely epic RPG it should take more time than that and the world in my opinion should be massively open but no not online that would ruin the whole game due to the fact that everything you do has direct reaction to what your party “feels” and if this were online you would have no party because you cant have multiple people running around in different parties with different goals in the end them being the same person. Besides what would the world due hen someone desided to start there own “Blight” im sure that they would have no problems finding followers and collapsing the whole system but maybe one day they can figure it out.

The point of the multi-runs is that you get as much as you can of the unlock awards and sometimes you cant do that the firsty time thru a game.

So in the end run i am agreeinf with both Emily and Felix42 and the Admin.
The Game is great but could be better, the reason for all the choices is because the game itself dont take that long and thats the reason for all of the side quests as well but the load time sux so thats what draws me away from the sidequests and even the rewards are kinda bad but if you want all of the unlocks then you have to do everything.

“i still beat the game in less than a week”

How long did it actually take you in hours for example (if you can guesstimate it.)

One gamer’s “week” of playing can be drastically different than another’s…

If your initial play through took you at least 20 hours than I would say its a well sized game, unless you are a HUGE fan of RPGs and must have like 40+ hours.

My character have made sex with Alistair!…Good thing I give him many Gifts, I’m gonna download the DLCs first. Bioware has a new strategy on constraining the players to the game features by adding new downloadable contents , I fear other RPG developers will imitate this kind of strategy.

Honestly this game is awesome and they did a good job. This in mu opinion will become a classic because of the great story. Since there are so many different things you can do on this game I do see great reason for replay value. You can do the game over and over again and you would not do the same thing twice besides killing the blight.

    Haha what a shit review!

You would rather play Fable II? Actually? I love how this review is only a few paragraphs long, and pretty much says “this game is bad” but actually provides little backing for that opinion. Care to discuss the great voice acting and depth of the story and character? Oh no, forget about it! Lets just focus on the combat!

You would probably be better off writing the synopsis for movies on imdb than trying to write reviews.

    @ Jay –

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion. I never commented about the voice acting since there are many games that have that yet fall short in other areas. I never said the voice acting was bad, either. Also, I never said the game was “bad”. When compared to BioWare’s other games, in my opinion, it’s just not as good – and BioWare is one of the few developers that I have a high expectation on. To me, they are in the same realm as Blizzard, and each game from those companies should be just about perfect.

Again, my biggest complaint was on the lacking of an online multi-player option. For how I like to game, that is an important factor in what I like in a game. I’m sure many people are extremely happy with what BioWare made. I just have different standards, that’s all.

Amazing Game, the multiplayer is not a big deal when i’ve pumped 100+ hours into this ‘non replayable’ game. Despite …. replaying it. And i never replay games. In fact i did not play Balders Gate so maybe i didnt come into this with false expectations. Also, i have classically hated pausing in games let alone controling more then one character. I put aside my Oblivion expectations and got a game i’ll enjoy for a long time. IMO Game of the year. And readers if you want real reviews, check out giantbomb.com.

“That was kind of random. Did that have anything to do with anything?”

This is the freaking Dragon Age thread!(Or the closest to it, anyway.) What better place for random comments about Dragon Age?

But no, it didn’t really have anything to do with anything. Except for the incident that Diana unwittingly tread over my delicate memories and painfully tore open old wounds that I’ve been at pains to forget. Nothing important.

“BTW, if you’re feeling depressed because a fictional character ditched you, you might want to consider going into therapy. People have died that way, y’know.”

That doesn’t begin to sum it up! If there exists a more sadistic set of choices than the ones you’re presented with at the end of Dragon Age: Origins, I don’t know of them.

“Player, you now must choose how the game will end: Through door one, you lose, and you probably set into motions events that will have serious repercussions for the world soon enough. Through door two, Morrigan loses, you MEGALOSE, and you DIE in the process. And just to grind in how much we really and truly hate you, if you pick the option where you live, Morrigan is going to totally tease the sh!t out of you right before you lose. What’s it gonna be?”

That’s how the game ends. It sucks to be a straight male in Dragon Age. The only straight female who you can romance apparently hates your guts, even if her approval is +100.(Dammit! Flemeth was right!) For that matter, the female-PC-romancing-Alistair doesn’t end prettily either.

Don’t worry, though, I’m not about to go suicidal over this. It isn’t that important.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go cry myself to sleep over my lost love. Damn Bioware for making such an emotionally involving game; it literally hurts.

One playthrough, minimal sidequesting, lots of talking to companions. It took me 48 hours and 34 minutes. And i’m pretty good at RPG’s

“Did you know guys that even a male character could engage sex with Zevran?”

I found that out whilst playing as an old, dwarven noble. This game has hard, sweaty, Dwarf on antonio-banderas-sounding Elf manloving. Nothing else compares.

As Bioware games go, yes its a little small on the customisation (three class, three races, minimal skill set ups, no really good axes, maces, hammers, and any armour not of a heavy make is dull) but dammit, the storyline and various quotes could make me forgive a slew of active time events for a main end of game boss…Which it doesn’t have. The end of game boss is epic, and hard.

As for the choices… 6 distinct endings, numerous turning points in the game, balck white and grey choices (and everything in between)… Its glorious.

“BTW, if you’re feeling depressed because a fictional character ditched you, you might want to consider going into therapy. ”

You sir, have been spending far too much time on killzone, halo, or whatever other poor excuse for a story based game you play these days. If an important character leaves, dies (AERIS! *Weeps*, Fable 2 wife and child! *weeps more*) or otherwise is wounded canonically, and the gamer feels nothing, then the writers have failed.

Dragon age writers manage to make the player care about their companions, and even some NPC’s, to the point that I openly wept four times throughout the game. Then again, I’m emotional like that.

Don’t disparage a gamer if they feel loss at anothers demise, game or not. Disparage them if they laugh throughout a well done death scene, or cheer when a good person meets a gristly end.

With a wife and newborn, I don’t get to play as often or as long in one sitting as I would like…which kills me, because I love this game. Yes, the fighting can get tedious and repetitious, but name a game that doesn’t. As far as multi-player goes…I quite WoW because in order for me to experience a fraction of the game, I have to put in enough time to compete with the guys who live on the game. With a busy life, I love that this is single player; I can play as I wish and not be penalized for the time I don’t play. As for the fighting, the tactics make the game. Sure, it is different, but that is how they made it. It is nearly impossible to fight without micro-managing, especially when playing on harder difficulties. Plus, I can have my party fight the way I want them to. Impossible to guarantee that in multi-player. And the story! Remove the flame-warring on this thread and you’ll see the passion for lovers of this game – passion that can only arise from an engrosing story. I am playing as common elf rogue, and I wanted to destroy the arl’s son in the origin story. Literally – I was so engrossed in the story that I couldn’t stop hating him, even when I wasn’t playing. Bioware excels at story based RPGs, and they delivered 100%.

This game is truly awesome. i have never been one to play video games cause i am usually more interested in the computer and when i do pick up a video game i usually play an easy game that i end up putting down and forgetting about for months till i decide to play it again. i have gotten obsessed with this game and am always begging my brother to bring it out so i could play it. i am actually thinking of paying my brother the 60 bucks he paid for it just to be able to play it more often. i am a fan of medieval rpgs and with oblivion it has a fairly good storyline but it feels rushed and also has no romance in it. fable 2 is great but it also feels rushed and seems to have the same storyline no matter how u play it plus u don’t really get attached to ur spouses, u get kids always coming and bugging u all through town and u don’t get attached to any of the other main characters either. in this game ur choices effect the story pretty good, it does not feel rushed at all, it is a bit of a challenge, u get attached to the others, u get 3 others that help u fight, which i say is a huge help in some instinces, pkus u can even have a romance with a party member. screw multi-player. i think it’s not even logical when u have 3 other party members with ya plus u have quite a few choices on whom those party members shall be. i say this game is well worth the money. and i shall be creating a second character when i am done with the first cause i always have to have a good character and a bad one, plus it will be interesting to see a different storyline. i might even make a third or fourth character, possibly even fourth or more. lol. i hope u enjoyed reading my opinion on this amazing game. def since i wrote it on my wii with my wii remote and sensor bar (so not fun). and that is how much i love this game. that i’d sit here and write this whole thing that ppl will most likely not even read all the way through. lol

right right, i hated his vest as well, but Fran is freaking awesome, and Balthier(misspell) is as well, never really got around to the other characters though because they have to be lvled individually. The license system also gave some or the best customization for the franchise besides the Tactics series, and the sphere grid (god i hated the sphere grid).

  • TheSorrow

I hated the sphere grid as well, but after you get to a certain point, you can level up pretty quickly by facing monsters in Omega Ruins. Tidus’s sphere grid (another character I hate)
is completely filled, as well as Rikku’s and Auron’s (an awesome character).

Only reason i got DAO is to hold me of for WoW Cataclysm which WoW, no offense to people who are majorly addicted to DAO, is slightly better. In my opinion of course. Because you can level up to higher lvls, more world to explore, and more characters to create and customize, for instance a Night Elf of Worgen, including all the races in DAO ( human, elf, and dwarf )

    @DAO lUv3r

What’s the cake in DAO is its story, playing it has a pay-off unlike MMORPGs such as WoW which has no conclusion. New items, races, characters, spells, creatures, places that are added to every new WoW add-on is only just a chaff to spice the game, usual routine of online gaming, once you completed packing the new items, killing new bosses & creatures & visiting new places you will get bored again. (old method of convincing players)

Thanks to Blizzard for ruining the saga of Warcraft through the Wrath Of The Lich King and for not making another Warcraft RTS game.

I loved this game, the gameplay was great (altough you have to play it on hard). When this game is played on hard mode it is the best tactical rpg i have ever played. Before you begin a fight you pause the game and scan the battlefield, you look at all the enemies and you form a strategy. i.e. I send my templar over the kill the mage while my mage stuns the enemies in his way so he can get through. My rouge looks for someone standing by themselves and takes them out, while my dog grabs all the aggro. My templar gets to the mage pretty quick so my mage starts freezing people so my rouge can shatter them with a critcal hit. The mage is dead and my dogs about to be so I cast a heal spell on him and send my worrior in the heat of the battle. My rouge join to and goes everywhere that he can flank and kills his enemies fast. My party has won the battle and I feel emensely proud of myself that I have killed the cult of blood mages by using my brain. You get these highs time and again as you play this game and you love it. Now while I know people do not like the fact that it is too open ended, but part of the good thing is that it affects the game more than is bearable. It’s not like if you decide to kill one insignificant beggar in the middle of nowhere people in the city of redcliffe will somehow findout and actually care. Even when you help the elves, even if you instead deicde to kill them all the only difference is that you get wherewolves in the final battle. or maybe your party members disposition towards you will change. I saw one of the comments said “I don’t like the fact that you could be standing rigth next to someone and swing your sword, but becsue your dexterity modifier was not high enought you somehow miss.” This is because your attack roll represents not only how good your swing was but how good their block/dodge/parry was. so all in all I give this game a 10/10 the only reason that you should not get this game is because you have no brain and cannot think in which case you probably are illiterate so you could not even be reading this review right now.

After reading everyone of these posts, i decided to add my own. wilst the game has its ups and downs, its sustains and throw aways, i feel that over all, it is a great game. yes parts are tedious and grueling, and yes we may wish we had a fellow gamer controlling wynne so we would be adequatley healed. but the fact of the matter is, we dont. We must accept the game for what it is, not for what it could be, or should be. had bioware wanted it to be a mmorpg, they would have made it so. had they wanted it to contain a simple mario bros concept, they would have. play the game for the adventure. bask in the glory of beheading foes or killing ogres “god of war” style. just because one game makes something, that doesnt mean other games cant do it. just like IRL, if we put peanut butter and jelly on bread, that doesnt mean the russians cant do it. Do you all see my point? no single person is right in these threads, and none are wrong, for they are only opinions.

i just beat the game dragon origins if your into old time games and are “considering” getting this game. GET IT i promise you you’ll love it. its single handedly one of the best games ive played fo the xbox 360 the only flaw about this game is the combat system couldve been a little bit better but besides that i recommend it to anyone! it has mass effect oblivion and a little bit of world of warcraft all mixed into it. you have so many choices and climaxes to choose from and everything you do affects everyone else great game 10/10

I’m only inclined on playing DAO on the PC since the X360 & PS3 versions shares some bugs with the PC version, also modding is best on PC since downloads are very easy to get unlike in the consoles that you will have to go toe-to-toe.

    10/10?

    Before – Yes
Now – Mass Effect 2 for the 10/10

Every class has an advantage and disadvantage, well, what suits your play? You want Hack & Slash(Warrior)? Magic Barrage(Mage)? or Ranged Looter(Rogue)?

“Also how do u get the content soldiers peak?

You can get it from an original copy of Dragon Age, or you could download it. I’m done with Return To Ostagar.

I wish I could DL some DLC off the web because AT&T cant come till the 9th to setup my WIFI at my new apt so I cant keep playing with my lvl 21 Mage Deonotus. I was kinda hoping to be able to lvl up more so i can learn every skill on my tree and every specialization skill tree. But they dont repsawn the enemies you kill so you can go and farm exp to lvl up much. And i was REALLY hoping for a New Game+ because I like the feeling of being a sort of god against the mighty horde of the Darkspawn. My heart jumped when they showed me the crater with the archdemon and all those darkspawn I wish i could have been placed at the bottom and ran through them with a Blizzard+Inferno+Tempest combo. But one can only hope i guess lol

    @Ben C.

Max level for DAO is level 25, if you using an original copy of Dragon Age then you will be able to play the premium DLC package included on the copy. The Warden’s Keep & the Stone Prisoner will give you additional gameplay, items & a party member.

But if you aren’t using an original copy then you could download the DLCs & the latest additional content, The Return To Ostagar.

And BTW, wait for the Dragon Age Awakening this March, that Dragon Age add-on will surely burn your muscles.

As for me I’m not using an internet connection to play DAO, since I just DL the game and all of the DLCs, plus I DL some mods also which will add some goodies of the game.
