Making his debut on FactPile is Malcolm Reynolds of the Firefly/Serenity Franchise. I know a lot of people are fans of Reynolds, but there are a few who walk the sci-fi grounds who can compete with Kirk.
What say you?

i like kirk but i go with reynolds,
he is an ex-soldier from a very brutal war and fought, in the most brutal campaign of it serenity valley, he is an excellent shot, good at hand to hand combat being able to go up against a goverment assasin and is quick thinker able to come up with a plan in no time at all, and he has a huge pain tolerance seen when he didnt give in to being tortured and was even able to fight afterwards.
where kirk has an unusual fighting style, lots of rolling, judo chops, and kicks, he has red shirts do his shooting for him, and most of the time he relies on spock, bones, and scotty to come up with the plan, or make his work by filling in the blanks, like scotty a need more power, to destroy this evil space cloud give it to me, without actually telling how to get the power.

Damn, I want to say Mal, but he cannot hope to match Kirk’s track record.

good at hand to hand??
Kirk would win… Mal would come in to negotiate a vacation from his crappy solar system… and
/judo chop!

lets look at the judo master that is kirk in action

how can a mere mortal ever hope to defeat him.

Fine with me Admin. Personally i think Mal will win. He has a real gun. Not a pansy little phaser that is easy to dodge and has slow firing rates.

have you ever fought a sparkly eyed up right lizard in ‘that seventies” leotard??
that totally stress’ ones judo capabilities

Soo…Sapper Gun vs Phaser which would you want?
January 14, 2010

depends, the practical applications for a Phaser are almost infiinite… while i have a fondness of the tool of my profession… a Phaser could be left on creating a sweeping motion… plus near light speed projections are awesome…

another example of the man-god that is kirk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyhhFzE5O5U
why is he wasting his time with reynolds, when he should be fighting the likes of the hulk.
when reynolds can only fight like this, what hope does he have

Yeah thats neat and all but look at the firing rate compared to guns. Much slower.

Oh! and the Space Commies actually have a good gun. But, Kirk doesn’t get it.
TR-116 Projectile Rifle
The TR-116 Projectile Rifle is a prototype weapon developed by the Federation for situations where conventional energy weapons might be rendered useless by dampening fields or other countermeasures. It is essentially a conventional rifle, but with a rather futuristic visual style. It is introduced in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Field of Fire”, where it is used in conjunction with a micro-transporter and a visual scanner headpiece to create a very potent sniper rifle. With the scanner, the shooter can precisely target people hundreds of meters away and through solid matter with no difficulty. Using the transporter attached to the barrel, the slug can then be transported at full velocity, materializing at point-blank range.

well phaser does have the advantage in that, if set at higher rate it can vaporise you no matter where it hits.

Yeah but its easy to dodge. All you have to do is duck or move to the side or get behind a large rock.

i cant move FTL so…. dodging a phaser might not be all that easy…
either way i never said i would scrap all kinetic weapons for a phaser… but as duty side arm mk23 or phaser… i think i would have to go with phaser…

Kirk “I warn you, I am…capable of huge….feats of skill”
Mal *shoots kirk* “…*incoherant chinese* you people talk too much. Now where are those alien women, Its been far too long and I have a powerful urge to sow my seeds…”
And then Bones and Simon join forces and become a sarcastically powerful medical force, curing all disease ever.

ill say mal here, he fought a man that was a better fighter than him, with a scewdriver against a sword, got stabbed, and still won

I never watched Star Trek unlike Firefly, so my knowledge on Kirk’s feats are limited.
I did however see his fight with some lizard man… and on the grounds of him looking like a complete jerkass, i’ll throw my vote in with Reynolds for a hand-to-hand fight.
Plus Malcolm is a pretty resourceful guy in his own right. So my money is on him.

Ok jokes over Captain Kirk is one of the best Starfleet officers out there. He has faced countless enemies and beat them all. In the Star Trek Universe he is a legend. So much so even people outside of the Federation knows who he is.

Ma, and his ship serenity, are also well known in that universe. Every smuggler and the entire galaxy spanning alliance knows of them, and a great many crime lords trust them to do what needs doing.

put kirk on a bridge and give him a good crew and he can do the impossible, put him on a planet in a one on one fight and he becomes judo chopping rock throwing maniac, who is captured by every space villian out there.

Put Mal on a busted ship, with a crew of misfits and at least one crew member who wants his job, not to mention a few who are just plain unstable, and he’ll still do the impossible.
Leave him nekkid on a planet, and he’ll have planned it.
get into a fist fight with him, he will shoot your ass down. Get into a gun fight and he may just have Jayne shoot you instead.

Lolz. I Seriously think that Mal would win this. In my opinion a gun is a much better tool of death than the Phaser. Plus, Mal is an all rounder. Good at fighting and leading with a few other skills thrown in for good measure.

Thank you admin for recognizing Mal needed to be here on Factpile. Anyway, for the fight itself, if we have to go with current incarnations, that’d mean this Captain Kirk is the one who had his ass kicked half the time in the new Star Trek movie.
I think we all know who’d win if this is the case.
Even if it isn’t, I’d still have to say Mal considering the man seems to be a better shot than Kirk, probably equal hand-to-hand fighter (even if he isn’t, he’s certainly a better dirty fighter), and can get his ass kicked alot harder and still not give up (mentioned somewhere above, he was stabbed by a better fighter in Serenity, and still managed to beat him with a screw driver).

Overall, Mal is a better captain. I mean, yes, kick has kicked ass over the years, but he’s had the backing of Starfleet, Bones, a FTL space cruiser, centuries of technological developement in a near utopian future, and last but not least Spock.
Reynolds has PTSD, a cargo ship without weapons, shields, or FTL drive, a crew of misfits/criminals, and a very finite quantity of cash.

Curiously enough, shaun linked videos in post #5 and #10 showing Kirk going up against two creatures with physical strength several times that of Kirk. Gotta remember kiddies, that Star Trek: The Original Series was filmed in the freaking 70s. Comparing the cinematography to a series from the the 2000s is just silly. Now consider the newest Star Trek movie. Kirk got his ass handed to him three times in the movie, the first time he was drunk and faced what, 5 sober rather large gents. The second time was from Spock, and unless everybody seems to be forgetting, the average strength of a Vulcan is THREE times that of a human being. The fact that Spock’s little onslaught didn’t flat out kill him is extremely impressive. The next is when he was fighting the Romulans onboard the Narada, and Romulans also have significantly higher strength then Humans.
Let’s take a look at some of Kirk’s better feats shall we? Sure Reynolds is able to survive with little money, a broken cargo ship and a crew of criminals, but Kirk faced down god-entities on a regular basis. He can go toe to toe with a Vulcan in combat, and attack a Gorn head first in a fist fight. Reynolds is no match for Captain Kirk.
Not to mention that any of the ships Kirk has commanded would be able to destroy the Serenity with it’s exhaust.
Oh… and:
“Yeah but its easy to dodge. All you have to do is duck or move to the side or get behind a large rock.”
You mean like, dodging a normal gun?

In Fairness, Mal can take on an entire galactically spanning empire, along with a galaxy surrounding hordes of flesh-hungry maniacs, and only lose two of his crew. Compared to kirk who tends to lose at least one or two members of his crew when he so much as goes out on recon.
In a fair fight, I don’t doubt kirk would win. The man must be damn near superhuman given his accomplishments. However, There wouldn’t be a fair fight. There would be a faux fair fight, and then Mal would (going by his roguish persona) shoot Kirk dead.
Were I to choose a captain to follow it would be much harder. While Mal does seem far more compassionate, the fact is living on serenity would be terrible, especially in comparison to any of the enterprises.

@ss – limited food, high chance of breakdown, repeated crashes, no real defenses, at least two unstable people on board and the whole “the entire alliance is out to get this rust-bucket” problem.
doesn’t quite compare to the Enterprise.

“Whomever voted for Chris Pine being a better Captain Kirk in the Poll needs a doctor”
Pish, Shatner is the biggest ham outside of Brian Bloody Blessed, and has half the aforementioned’s sheer charisma.
Chris Pine can act without judicious use of the “dramatic pause”, and thus is a better person to play the role.
For much the same reason that Adam west is by far the most entertaining batman, but far from the best man to play the role. Entertainment does not equal suitability.

If we are taking the current incarnation of Kirk than observation shows that the phaser from the movie work in the same way that the standard sidearm would work except the phaser uses an energy based projectile instead of a bullet and since we cannot confirm, as far as I know, that the phaser as any other power settings other then stun or kill. Though I do not think that the one on one fight would be determined by the technologies of the respective firearms used as the Federation Starfleet uniforms do not appear to add protection from standard slug firing guns.
Is this a one-on-one fight between the respective captains by themselves with only what they would carry on their persons on a standard episode or a full comparison on both their fighting skills, aswell as the respective ships and crews that they could call upon?

Even Malcolm reynolds admits the Enterprise is a better ship than Serenity. Well, not Mal, but Nathan Fillion, the actor who plays him. Best conversation ever, between scotty and Mal (Simon Pegg and Nathan Fillion)
And if we’re to compare crews I think its a little unfair. Even if we just stick to the more famous named guys, Kirks team would outnumber Mal’s. and if we’re talking about the full crews… overkill.
