15 Reasons Why Halo 3 is Better than Halo 4

15 Reasons Why Halo 3 is Better than Halo 4

So, Halo 4 has been out for a few months now, and I’ve given it a fair shake, but there are some things that I just can’t get past no matter how much I try. I know that 343 is trying to put their own mark on the game, and are trying to “keep up with the Joneses” (ala Call of Duty), but in the mad scramble to offer what those games have, part of what made Halo a unique gaming experience from those other franchises has been lost. I popped Halo 3 back in for comparison and it was quite a revelation on how different these two games are.

Yes, it’s been years since Halo 3 came out, and gameplay has changed, I acknowledge that. However, at the core of every game that gets made, there is one underlying factor – make the game fun to play. Graphics are nice to look at, and characters and weapons and cutscenes make for nice eye candy, but none of that will matter if the game itself isn’t fun to play.

All of this lead to this article. Take it or leave it, makes no difference to me.

In Halo 3, each game type had an individual ranking. This was a great experience since it allowed for those who focused on one game type to show off with their level, all the while demonstrating to others on the other game types where they hardly played. I know there was an overall ranking as well, but how often was that looked at?

Halo 3 Dual Wielding
Is it the best way to fight? For many situations, no. But it’s fun to run in guns blazing and you can overwhelm people sometimes by this kind of attack. It’s already been programed into the game, why not keep it as an option? Everyone know that two maulers beats a shotgun, and combos like that brought balance to the game play

One of the main problems of Halo 4 is that most of the maps are fairly large. I know this is done to account for those who have the unlimited run enabled (like I do), jetpacks and the thrust option. But in building maps that factor in these abilities also forces the map makers to create settings where a player must use their abilities in order to actively participate. I’m guessing this was done on purpose, and it’s part of what leads to the main problem of Halo 4. More on that later.

What made Halo 3 great? Weapon spawns at preset times, power weapons let you dominate the game. In Halo 4, there are no preset times when weapons will re-appear. Again, this was probably done to create game balance, but it’s taken away from what the Halo experience was about. With everyone having custom load-outs, the idea of the power weapon has quickly been set into the past. Since I can customize the way I have my Spartan spawn with certain weapons and powers, there is no “rush” to a certain point on the map – which leads to conflict – which leads to an enjoyable game play experience.

I understand the entire introduction of Promethean weapons, but why wouldn’t all the previous weapons not return as well? The Flamethrower was fantastic in Halo 3. Was it used in every situation? Of course not. To me, it’s mostly a defensive weapon. But the fact I could use it when the situation provided it, made it very enjoyable.

Brute Shot – Why isn’t this available? I used to love jumping with this weapon, and I recognize that in Halo 4 the need for this can be wiped away with a jetpack, but why not give me the option to use it?

Maulers – Let me dual wield these against the shotgun or the scattershot and I’d take them out every time.

Why is the Hornet not here? It’s not the greatest flying vehicle, but it had one great element to it: I could pick up the flag carrier and fly them back to victory. So many matches on Avalanche were fantastic just for this one reason alone.

Brute Chopper. Honestly, I never thought much of it, but it was a fun vehicle to hop into and deliver some great splatters along the way.

Personally, I could care less about this option, but I know many people loved playing as an elite. Was there some deep seeded hatred on letting players enjoying the game on their own terms?

The crouch action using the control stick seems to be more fluid than with the button.

Blackout, The Pit, Guardian, Avalanche, Standoff, Last Resort and Epilogue (Epitaph).
There are no maps that compare to these in Halo 4. Ragnarok is almost a complete copy of Valhalla, they just added a Mantis and called it a day. Don’t know why everyone loves this map. Coagulation is the best rendition of the original Blood Gulch map ever. (Halo 2 – two-story base, Banshee in the bottom, grav lift on one side underneath, rockets in the center of the map). Watch the video below.

Halo 2 Coagulation Highlights

Perhaps one of the best Marine stereo types in gaming, yet he made no appearance in Halo 4.

This failed since you didn’t include the Covenant Sniper. Easily the best weapon in the game, but not having it in a snipers match was kind of stupid.

I had to throw in one for Halo Reach. This is actually a great thing. No Tebow antics here.

I can drop the flag. Although I love the pistol option on Halo 4, I should be able to drop the flag and attack with my weapons.

Really. Where is it?

Halo Matchmaking
Why is this needed? Are poses that important? Do they impact your gameplay? Do they intimidate other players? Do they offer any advantages in the game? Nope. This was done just to look “cool”

On X-mas day (2012) I was the noob at level 34, going up against players ranked in the 130’s!
How is that even possible? In Halo 3 the greatest disparity was only 50 levels!

Just like when Xbox live shut down Halo 2, this fun gameplay will only last for so long, so I will need to enjoy this while I can.

Who cares? Is this the carrot that you need to dangle in order to get people to continue playing? I always thought the goal was to make a game that was FUN TO PLAY, and the rest would take care of itself.

No Doubles Expert says it best here.

Playing Halo 4 feels rushed. I have no time to set up or strategize.
Even when behind, in Halo 3, I feel like I can come back – I was able to do it many times. Once I get behind in Halo 4, I know it’s pretty much over since no power weapons will return to help me overcome my weakness as a Halo 4 player.

Maybe I’m just getting old and don’t like this style of gameplay anymore? I play games like Battlefield and Call of Duty because I want a DIFFERENT experience from Halo, but now Halo feels like those games.

But what’s the point of playing something that feels like everything else?

I’ve always hated that Halo would take vehicles and weapons away after introducing them. I really agree that they should give you the option to use them.

I would really love if in Halo 5&6 they brought more guns back, instead of adding new guns(minus the Forerunner weapons, they should keep making new guns for them). They should also bring back being able to dual wield, equipment(personally I’ve always found them more useful than most of the armor abilities), and some old vehicles would be nice too.

Pretty much agree with every point however I will probably continue to play Halo 4 since my friends play that.

Ordnance drops have made weapon spawning useless, everyone has power weapons eventually at one point in the game and it is just ridiculous.

  7. the_man_with The_Answers January 2, 2013 at 5:45 pm -      #7

What I hate is the goddamn marker on every power weapon. Whatever happened to having to learn the map?

Also, weeeeeaaaakkkkk grenades and waay OP Needler. I liked the needler for Reach much better. And it actually made sense too. Instead of the needles going THROUGH your active shields and sticking in, you have to actually take out the shields THEN you can super-combine them. Now it’s back to the super-tracking pew-pew-pew-BOOM weapon.

I would really like the chopper, and even the spectre and/or prowler back. Those where some cool vehicles.Hornet would be nice too, or maybe a new UNSC mini-jet to equal the Banshee. Scorpion is too slow, same goes for its shells. Rocket moves too slow. Sticky detonator is a really good replacement for the grenade launcher though (Doesn’t make up for the lack of the ultra badass Mauler+Mauler action though).

…He’s dead. halo dosent revive the dead.

Bungie took it out in odst and didnt put it back in reach….im pretty sure 343 wasnt going to bring it back

  9. the_man_with The_Answers January 2, 2013 at 7:45 pm -      #9

They took it out in ODST because you are a regular human that doesn’t have hax skills with weapons acquired from nearly a decade of training and bio-augmentation. Maybe you’ve never tried, but dual-wielding guns and retaining any sort of effectiveness is hard.

Also, MJOLNIR Mark VI was the first HUD system that supported multiple weapons to be recognized and have their reticles displayed. HUDs like on MJOLNIR Mark V (Halo:CE, Halo:Reach), and for ODSTs don’t support two reticles being displayed at once.

If you tried to dual wield, you would either end up with a single fucked-up reticule that isn’t aiming properly for either weapon, or just one reticle for one weapon, completely disregarding the other (Those two apply also for the information about ammunition remaining in your magazine as well as spare ammunition).

    @the_man_with The_Answers

hmmm i didn’t think of that. And i guess the cinematic moments dont count. (red team halowars, miranda keyes halo 3, noble-6)

    (No sarcasm intended)

  11. the_man_with The_Answers January 2, 2013 at 9:16 pm -      #11

Noble 6 and Red Team have the excuse of being hyper-lethal-trained-from-childhood-then-heavily-augmented advantage, so it is entirely possible that they, with their insane levels of coordination and genius level IQs, could manage firing two weapons with effectiveness.

Miranda’s job didn’t exactly require any level of special coordination, and in fact, she didn’t even do anything special. Anybody, given they are strong enough, can point two weapons at two essentially point-blank targets.

Though SPARTAN-IVs, with MJOLNIR Gen2, should still be able to dual-wield.

  12. DB2031 January 2, 2013 at 9:27 pm -      #12

    1. Ranking System: This was done to include specializations, a reward for those that beat multiplayer.
    2. Dual Wielding: All this does is make you look cooler while making half of the guns underpowered alone and taking away melee and grenades while using them. No use at all.
    3. Smaller Maps: Why turn it into CoD? How does this make H4 worse than H3? Play Haven if you care that much.
    4. Power Weapons: Yes, they’ve always “turned the tide,” and considering only two people really only have ordinance until ammo runs out, it’s not a big deal.
    5. Weapons taken out: They added new ones that take the place, no need for them.
    6. Vehicles: Maybe in a future DLC. A valid point, but not necessary.
    7. Play as an Elite: No, this is the UNSC Infinity. Some armor looks covenant, have fun.
    8. Teabagging: Use a Hologram you homo, or click the crouch button.
    9. Better Maps: Eh, I enjoy the ones now, you didn’t give any reasons, I think this is here just to make it 15… Just like most of these points.
    10. Johnson: If you like H3, wouldn’t you know he died? SPOILER ALERT FROM THE PAST DECADE
    11. Team Snipers: It is in a rotation, they are fixing it as I have heard.
    12. No Armor Lock: GOOD! Hardlight Shield is the same but less cheap, ya heartless noob.
    13. CTF: The magnum is more powerful when you hold the flag, if you have trouble with CTF then play a less skill-requiring game mode.
    14. Assault: In custom game modes. Again, it is likely they will add it in following a major update this month.
    15. Player Cards: Yes, let’s ditch customization in favor of solid colored names. You’re trying too hard.
    16. Level Limit: It changed. Get over it. This isn’t news to anyone but you.
    17. Lifespan: What does this have to do with H4? Again you fail.
    18. Armor Customization: This has been in every Halo, you sir are a failure.
    19. Good multiplayer: It has it. If you suck, that’s your fault.
    20. Summary: First you say everyone has a power weapon, now you whine no one does, then you complain about everything that is different for better or for worse just to compile a list. Such a fail. It’s not rushed, look at it. Considering it wasn’t even supposed to exist a few years ago, I’d say it’s the best Halo if it’s rushed and still this great.

  13. Reconn January 2, 2013 at 10:25 pm -      #13

Complaining that Johnson didnt appear just shows how little you even know about halo. Also, not being able to come back in an almost lost match? I direct you to me joining a KotH match down by 90 points and winning.

Armor customization was also in halo 3…

It seems every thread poster has something specifically against halo, and/or knows little about it.

  14. Gluttonous-Behemoth January 2, 2013 at 11:02 pm -      #14

Yeah, a lot of us kind of do. Not against Halo itself, but there have been enough idiots that have come bumbling here spewing great deals of innacuracies and displaying a most unpleasant habit of disregarding established facts that there is a bit of a sour taste left over.

I personally think that Halo is a beautifully created universe in many aspects, which I’ll attribute to the skills of authors like Tobias Buckell and Joseph Staten, who did wonderfully fleshing it out. But, I’ll admit that every time I encounter a discussion featuring Halo, I half expect a halfwit to howl “H4LO pwnz wf Splazorz and teh R1NGZ”.

Perhaps one of the best Marine stereo types in gaming, yet he made no appearance in Halo 4.’

Also I was a Christmas ‘noob’ as well.
Very first match I was pitted against ALL over 100 ranks.
Got 1st place cause they sucked despite my limitations.
    Moral? Rank doesn’t mean skill.
More likely means lots of Mountain Dew

  18. SgCombine January 3, 2013 at 8:38 am -      #18

    Thanks buddy.

    Who cares?”

What about FOTUS! It comes with its very own HORN(its great for CQC)!

  19. PrimusxPilus January 3, 2013 at 11:06 am -      #19

pretty much what my buddy GB said. Halo in and of itself is ok, even though I’ve never cared much for the franchise. It’s the morons that come in wasting our time spouting drivel, ignoring evidence, and wanking “DA CHEEEF” until he needs a cigarette from getting blown so hard.again nothing against the universe, it’s just low tier and people can’t accept that.

And yeah, that fucking splazor and teh ringgzz pwns bullshit happens on EVERY THREAD

  20. Reconn January 3, 2013 at 11:09 am -      #20

Well I understand that theres fanatics like that around, but in the past few chief-involved fights, I havent seen anybody like that. Sure, they might talk about the spartan laser and the rings but not in that fanboy fashion.

  21. PrimusxPilus January 3, 2013 at 11:46 am -      #21

Ha then mattstomp showed up last night. We’ve driven most purge but it’s a part of the pile

  22. therealbs January 3, 2013 at 12:55 pm -      #22

this has to be the worst article I’ve ever seen on this sight.
DB2031 basically said everything i would say. but one more thing the maps are fine and the maps can be bigger now because there is a sprint. halo 4 plays faster than any halo before it because everyone can sprint. And while i love armor lock being taken out the hardlight shield stops nothing at this point it seems useless to me.

  23. the_man_with The_Answers January 3, 2013 at 7:28 pm -      #23

    “No use at all.”

Duel Maulers ALWAYS has use. Or the noob combo, that works pretty well too.

“H4LO pwnz wf Splazorz and teh R1NGZ”.

    ^ Truth ^

  24. PrimusxPilus January 3, 2013 at 7:45 pm -      #24

That “truth” is for it being said or garnering a win?

  25. Commander Cross January 3, 2013 at 7:54 pm -      #25

    @Senior Praetor at #24

If its not an acute case of Tinfoiling going on that isn’t from me, I don’t know what is, for good or for ill.

Either way, outright wankage disgusts me more than any mere misrecollections could have managed, and I already have a firm top 10 list for Wankers that are most offensive on me in particular, let’s hope that no one is a part of that list in particular and I’ll leave my weapons away, okay?

  26. the_man_with The_Answers January 3, 2013 at 8:02 pm -      #26

“That “truth” is for it being said or garnering a win?”

garnering a win. If you didn’t pick up on it, it was said with sarcasm.

  27. PrimusxPilus January 3, 2013 at 8:13 pm -      #27

put the spoon down Cross. It’s ok.

Apologies but I had forgotten how wonderful a medium the interwebz was to convey sarcasm….

I personally like being allowed to choose my own load-out. I get to pick weapons and powers I would like to start with, rather than having pre-loaded ones that are almost guaranteed to give me guns I suck with.
That is just me, however. Perhaps it is because I do, indeed, suck at Halo, however I really do like that feature.

  30. Richard Rider, is a Skrull January 8, 2013 at 1:45 pm -      #30

We should have a Master Chief (Halo 3) Vs Master Chief (Halo 4) match.

  31. Deus Ex Machina January 14, 2013 at 1:49 am -      #31

I used to play the bejeesus out of Halo 3, and loved every minute of it for many of the reasons mentioned here, I was hoping Halo 4’s multiplayer would bring me back (as I thought Halo Reach’s multiplayer was shit too) but it didn’t. I enjoyed it a bit, but it felt too….Call of Dutyesque for me, and games seem to b becoming more and more CoD lately. The part that I believe is the worst is the loadouts, I despise them. I want the good ol’ days when everyone was on even playing ground with the same weapons and abilities (none) and it was a race for the power weapons. Not to mention they brought back Reach’s terrible armor abilities, which I don’t at all enjoy. So yeah the multiplayer has plunged, but I did like the campaign.

  32. RocKv3 April 14, 2013 at 5:24 pm -      #32

Look at all these kids defending this game acting like ur actually intelligent bout halo.

U can know the story but u were the kids who played social bc u could never get ur 50 in amything. Ur the kids who camp now witj boltshots and act like ur good. Go play cod. U guys obviously dont understand halo. The skill… wich ite obvioua u guys dont have considering ur arguments wich mean nothing. Everybody spawned with the same wepon and faught for others. Thats skill. Now in cod u hear oh hes using that scrub wepon nd thats why he killed me. U didnt hear that in halo bc it took so much more skill. U want variety then go ruin another game with how its ok to change all this. Theres more of us who understand the actual skill of halo and how its dead since reach and armor abilities then of u who want halo to be more accessible bc u really had no skill. Go play cod and ride them bc ur arguments arnt even close to touching the truth of halo. Maps are too big and not defined with memories. Kids are awful and need to stop thinking you know. Do ur reasearch… Ppl who got payed more in a weekend then u do in a month even can tell u. Its all over youtube and the facts are there. Those who defend H4 were never known in H3

  33. RocKv3 April 14, 2013 at 5:28 pm -      #33

And i bet u nerds start sayin u cant even spell. 2 things… its not a collage paper nd it dosnt hinder the point. Half of u only said if u knew bout halo ud know that he died. That was ur argument but honestly look u play story and that dosnt mean u know anything bc halo isnt dead the competitive multiplayer is…. get over urselves. I never post on anything but the ignorance of knoledge here is insane.

Well, someone clearly doesn’t actually know Halo 3.

  37. bill_ak_41 April 4, 2014 at 9:02 am -      #37

well halo 3 story line is better in that game but if you listen in halo two the master sergent or whatever he was wantin to know how sergent johnsen survived so there might be a chance he is still alive

  38. Tyran April 4, 2014 at 12:33 pm -      #38

We already know how Johnson survived the first Halo.

This time it is harder for him.

  39. Commander Cross April 4, 2014 at 1:53 pm -      #39

Did Halo 4 actually Canonize the Scarab Guns, by chance?

  40. Tyran April 4, 2014 at 2:48 pm -      #40

There wasn’t even a single Scarab in the game, so what you think?
