So, Halo 4 has been out for a few months now, and I’ve given it a fair shake, but there are some things that I just can’t get past no matter how much I try. I know that 343 is trying to put their own mark on the game, and are trying to “keep up with the Joneses” (ala Call of Duty), but in the mad scramble to offer what those games have, part of what made Halo a unique gaming experience from those other franchises has been lost. I popped Halo 3 back in for comparison and it was quite a revelation on how different these two games are.
Yes, it’s been years since Halo 3 came out, and gameplay has changed, I acknowledge that. However, at the core of every game that gets made, there is one underlying factor – make the game fun to play. Graphics are nice to look at, and characters and weapons and cutscenes make for nice eye candy, but none of that will matter if the game itself isn’t fun to play.
All of this lead to this article. Take it or leave it, makes no difference to me.
In Halo 3, each game type had an individual ranking. This was a great experience since it allowed for those who focused on one game type to show off with their level, all the while demonstrating to others on the other game types where they hardly played. I know there was an overall ranking as well, but how often was that looked at?
Is it the best way to fight? For many situations, no. But it’s fun to run in guns blazing and you can overwhelm people sometimes by this kind of attack. It’s already been programed into the game, why not keep it as an option? Everyone know that two maulers beats a shotgun, and combos like that brought balance to the game play
One of the main problems of Halo 4 is that most of the maps are fairly large. I know this is done to account for those who have the unlimited run enabled (like I do), jetpacks and the thrust option. But in building maps that factor in these abilities also forces the map makers to create settings where a player must use their abilities in order to actively participate. I’m guessing this was done on purpose, and it’s part of what leads to the main problem of Halo 4. More on that later.
POWER WEAPONS CAN TURN THE TIDE
What made Halo 3 great? Weapon spawns at preset times, power weapons let you dominate the game. In Halo 4, there are no preset times when weapons will re-appear. Again, this was probably done to create game balance, but it’s taken away from what the Halo experience was about. With everyone having custom load-outs, the idea of the power weapon has quickly been set into the past. Since I can customize the way I have my Spartan spawn with certain weapons and powers, there is no “rush” to a certain point on the map – which leads to conflict – which leads to an enjoyable game play experience.
WEAPONS: FLAMETHROWER, MAULERS & BRUTE SHOT
I understand the entire introduction of Promethean weapons, but why wouldn’t all the previous weapons not return as well? The Flamethrower was fantastic in Halo 3. Was it used in every situation? Of course not. To me, it’s mostly a defensive weapon. But the fact I could use it when the situation provided it, made it very enjoyable.
Brute Shot – Why isn’t this available? I used to love jumping with this weapon, and I recognize that in Halo 4 the need for this can be wiped away with a jetpack, but why not give me the option to use it?
Maulers – Let me dual wield these against the shotgun or the scattershot and I’d take them out every time.
VEHICLES: HORNET, BRUTE CHOPPER
Why is the Hornet not here? It’s not the greatest flying vehicle, but it had one great element to it: I could pick up the flag carrier and fly them back to victory. So many matches on Avalanche were fantastic just for this one reason alone.
Brute Chopper. Honestly, I never thought much of it, but it was a fun vehicle to hop into and deliver some great splatters along the way.
PLAY AS AN ELITE
Personally, I could care less about this option, but I know many people loved playing as an elite. Was there some deep seeded hatred on letting players enjoying the game on their own terms?
EASE OF TEABAGGING (FROM EXPERT)
The crouch action using the control stick seems to be more fluid than with the button.
Blackout, The Pit, Guardian, Avalanche, Standoff, Last Resort and Epilogue (Epitaph).
There are no maps that compare to these in Halo 4. Ragnarok is almost a complete copy of Valhalla, they just added a Mantis and called it a day. Don’t know why everyone loves this map. Coagulation is the best rendition of the original Blood Gulch map ever. (Halo 2 – two-story base, Banshee in the bottom, grav lift on one side underneath, rockets in the center of the map). Perhaps one of the best Marine stereo types in gaming, yet he made no appearance in Halo 4.
This failed since you didn’t include the Covenant Sniper. Easily the best weapon in the game, but not having it in a snipers match was kind of stupid.
NO ARMOR LOCK
I had to throw in one for Halo Reach. This is actually a great thing. No Tebow antics here.
I can drop the flag. Although I love the pistol option on Halo 4, I should be able to drop the flag and attack with my weapons.
WHERE IS ASSAULT?
Really. Where is it?

Why is this needed? Are poses that important? Do they impact your gameplay? Do they intimidate other players? Do they offer any advantages in the game? Nope. This was done just to look “cool”
On X-mas day (2012) I was the noob at level 34, going up against players ranked in the 130’s!
How is that even possible? In Halo 3 the greatest disparity was only 50 levels!
DOES HALO 3 DIE UPON THE NEXT XBOX CONSOLE RELEASE?
Just like when Xbox live shut down Halo 2, this fun gameplay will only last for so long, so I will need to enjoy this while I can.
Who cares? Is this the carrot that you need to dangle in order to get people to continue playing? I always thought the goal was to make a game that was FUN TO PLAY, and the rest would take care of itself.
WILL HALO EVER HAVE GOOD MULTIPLAYER MATCHES AGAIN?

Playing Halo 4 feels rushed. I have no time to set up or strategize.
Even when behind, in Halo 3, I feel like I can come back – I was able to do it many times. Once I get behind in Halo 4, I know it’s pretty much over since no power weapons will return to help me overcome my weakness as a Halo 4 player.
Maybe I’m just getting old and don’t like this style of gameplay anymore? I play games like Battlefield and Call of Duty because I want a DIFFERENT experience from Halo, but now Halo feels like those games.
But what’s the point of playing something that feels like everything else?
