Avatar Vs Tron Legacy

Avatar Vs Tron Legacy

Suggested by Ninjask19
For this match, we are pitting the Avatar movie up against Tron Legacy.

For this fight, we aren’t comparing how well the box office numbers were, but instead:

Which had the best visuals?
Which had the best plot?
Which do you believe deserves the FP award?

tron is really advanced but avatar is just god damn

  6. Anarchist213 January 11, 2011 at 11:10 am -      #6

Tron for two reasons. One, It had a more original story while Avatar was just a rip off of Dances with Wolves. Also because Avatar had a horrible ending. Sure it was all happy at the end but if they would’ve gone further the military would’ve come back with more people and bigger weapons. They condemned themselves. After all when the natives won a battle Europe didn’t just pack up and leave. They slaughtered.

Haven’t seen Tron yet but I also agree with the reasons Anarchist posted. Man I hated Avatar’s plot.

    Tron Legacy

Avatar was “pocahotas in space” with 3d ash ….

rest was crap (and it had the worst ending ever)

I didn’t see either movies for various reasons, but I’m going to go with Tron Legacy for two reasons: 1- all the fighting could have been avoided if the main character would have done his job in the first place. 2- I liked the original Tron, despite Legacy not featuring Tron himself.

Avatar. Yes it spawned tones of horrible 3d crapshoots done in post production with half the films out there now saying ‘ALSO IN 3D’. Yes its story wasn’t good. But it also made more sense, its action scenes were just better, and it was just overall far more entertaining.

“Avatar was “pocahotas in space” with 3d ash ….”
    This.
Maybe 3d would satisfy me, but the story sure didn’t. Smurfs+Pocahontas+The Jetsons isn’t a good idea if you ask me.

  19. Sparks January 11, 2011 at 2:38 pm -      #19

Tron was boring as shit, and neither had a particularly interesting plot. Tron was like a bunch of cliches in a blender.

New guy comes to town, is a savior and can somehow beat veterans.

Romantic interest (which was obvious and ONLY other option) is last of their kind.

filler..filler..filler..boring ass filler… then ends with a sunrise

Avatar was nothing new aside from the special effects, but there was more action and I liked the setting better than 90 minutes of emo rave scene lol

  20. Sparks January 11, 2011 at 2:39 pm -      #20

    edit***

I said “neither had a particularly interesting plot.” I was talking about Tron: Legacy and Avatar, not both Tron films.

  21. Carmine January 11, 2011 at 3:05 pm -      #21

    mypostisnotlongenough Avatar is better

  22. akelz7 January 11, 2011 at 5:09 pm -      #22

I prefer the beauty of avatar to the edginess of Tron.

  23. midnite marauder January 11, 2011 at 5:41 pm -      #23

I concur with Sparks. Neither movie was particularly good neither did either one have a really engrossing story that truly pulled me in. In fact very few movies do these days. However Avatar was by far the more entertaining plus it had a more interesting setting and creatures. Tron was as the first one too stale, sterile, and overly corny in my opinion.

  24. w00tm0ng3r January 11, 2011 at 6:26 pm -      #24

Let’s be perfectly honest here, no one watches these movies for the plot… and Avatar had far superior effects so it wins in my book.

  25. Zervziel January 11, 2011 at 7:05 pm -      #25

Pretty graphics do not make a good movie. Yes, Tron Legacy was cliched, but Avatar is just as cliched with a truly despicable ending. Here’s hoping the second involves mass bombings from space. Plus Tron had music by and even featured Daft Punk.

  26. Negative Zero January 11, 2011 at 7:09 pm -      #26

    Time for a rant…….

Avatar was complete steaming nutty brown bullshit!!! The story was the EXACT opposite of what would have REALLY happened!!! It was the fuckin’ Battle of Endor all over again (only Avatar was just a whole movie’s worth of plot shielding)!!! At least the Ewoks were somewhat likeable, unlike big blue hippie cat faced beanpole smufs that were vomited onto our screens in 3D (which should have stayed dead in the 80′s for God’s sake)!!! The only reasons Jake wanted to stay as a Na’vi was because he wasn’t a cripple in his Na’vi body and also because he was tappin’ that bitchy Na’vi chick who screamed more than she talked (just goes to show you how low Jake’s standards were). Jake was nothing but a damn traitor to his own kind!!! If I was in that movie I would have taken a chainsaw to the Tree of Souls.

As for Tron. I saw the first one when I was little and don’t remember nothing. But it looked boring and the new one doesn’t look much different.

  27. Zazax January 11, 2011 at 7:29 pm -      #27

” Here’s hoping the second involves mass bombings from space.”
    Agreed 100%.

” Jake was nothing but a damn traitor to his own kind!!! ”
He was also something of a dumbass. Really, Jake? You are warned by your badass commander that everything on this planet is trying to kill you (and that said badass commander almost died on his *first day*), then almost immediately after you just wander off by yourself and start touching random shit? Not to mention the fact that if you’d done your job and not banged the Chief’s daughter then nobody would have had to be shot in the first place.
Also, why didn’t they just shoot the Tree of Souls with one of those missiles they were dumbfiring everywhere. You know, the ones they used to bring down Hometree is a few volleys.

For the actual debate, definitely Tron. It may be cliched, but at least I couldn’t immediately identify at least 3 movies with identical plots (although I may just not be familiar with the appropriate movies). And I prefer tech-y stuff over nature-y stuff anyday.

  28. fungunz January 11, 2011 at 7:31 pm -      #28

I go for Tron cuz Jeff Bridges fights Jeff Bridges on a bridge.

  29. Negative Zero January 11, 2011 at 7:36 pm -      #29

    @Zazax
All excellent points that I forgot to mention.

  30. Gutsy January 11, 2011 at 8:10 pm -      #30

I don’t really like either of these movies but I’ll say my part. While Avatar’s plot was at least very similar to three other movies. The plot was simple and it was thin as paper. No characters in that movie were interesting or had the potential to be one but the movie did nothing with them. Special effects were brilliant. The movie’s CGI was far better than Tron. The ending was also bullshit as was the “romance” but both of the scenes didn’t last very long and it was predicted that would’ve happened when I first walked into the theatre. So I won’t nickpick and say that movie was TEH W0RSST M0ViE EVAR because of the unrealistic ending but it did sum everything up which an ending was supposed to do. All in all Avatar had a overused, simple, childish plot with some new CGI but that’s it. Nothing special nor horrible.

Tron Legacy however while having less powerful CGI technology than Avatar, it used their capabilites perfectly. Far better than glowing plants used in Avatar. They created an interesting also cool looking world which was unique and stunning. We’ve all seen big forests before and Avatar did the same thing but James Cameron wanted to add some retarted animals and plants. While Tron’s Legacy CGI was used perfectly, it’s script however is a mess. Like the first movie, Tron Legacy’s script was horrible. Sure it didn’t resemble three other movies but it had no sense of direction and it liked to ramble on. The movie showed us the coolest bits at the start of the movie and then when it finished, the movie just sat around and threw in some pitiful action scenes. This movie’s plot also more holes than Avatar. How did CLU-2 reach that portal before the main characters? While people like to complain about Avatar’s overused plot but at least it holds most of the time. Tron Legacy’s plot is boring like the first movie. It had the potential to be so much more, far more than Avatar but it didn’t even try. The characters while well acted, they were also paper thin and seemed they had only one purpose to exist.

To sum everything up, Avatar is my choice by a slight margin. If the creators of Tron Legacy learned their lesson and started getting better scripts and combined that with the already awesome CGI and Daft Punk all in one then that movie would be way out of Avatar’s league.

  31. akelz7 January 11, 2011 at 8:22 pm -      #31

“it’s script however is a mess.”
    I FIGHT FOR THE USER!!!!!!!!!!!

Plot wise I’ll have to go with Avatar. I see all of these complaints about it ripping off movie “x” and “y”, but at least it had some originality in the age of remakes and shitty ass sequels to 80′s movies. Also G.I. Joe is just so fucking awesome, and I liked Giovanni Ribsi and SIgourney Weaver.

    “some retarted animals and plants”
Fuck you buddy those flying dragon-pterodactyl things RULED. So did that cat, and that Rhino/Elephant/one MTG card from Conflux that I have in my Naya deck.

You know that thing called orbital bombardment? That would easily take care of them. If i was the human commander, i’d sit up in space, blast the holy hell out of the general area the tree of souls is in, using data from the survivors, and then send in my most powerful units in to mop up survivors in that area (and to destroy the tree of souls if it somehow evades destruction from my space guns), securing it for my purposes. Then we would slowly spread out, under cover fire from my ships, solwly but surely conquering the whole planet.
That’s what’s gonna happen in the second Avatar, if the humans have two brain cells to rub together.

Actually in our time Europeans constantly joined Native tribes. Their society was very attractive to them. Of course Europeans would come and find them and kill the tribe and then take the whites back to society to be “re-educated”. So although James Cameron didn’t touch the subject at all and I’m guessing his research didn’t expand outside of watching Dances with Wolves til his eyes bled. In the real world he probably would’ve joined for the society and not “because he was tappin’ that bitchy Na’vi chick”.

Fun Fact: They have much proof that is leans towards the belief that the American Government was based off the Native Society. Benjamin Franklin is even quoted talking about the Natives having the best society. Though I personally see in no way the resemblance…

I’m gonna go with Avatar. The funny thing is, I didn’t really pay attention to either movie (I kinda guessed they’d be crap) so I just looked at the pretty visuals. Avatar had the prettiest for me, so Avatar wins for me.

I don’t even need to do that. Just aim my exhaust directly at Pandora and let the atmosphere fry. Or for better PR, take an asteroid for “mining” and “accidentally” drop it onto Pandora.

Xenomorphs better be in the second movie.

  36. Gutsy January 11, 2011 at 9:48 pm -      #36

Is it just me or bomber planes and fighter jets don’t exist in the Avatar anymore?

  37. akelz7 January 11, 2011 at 9:52 pm -      #37

Well they replaced them with Falcons, dummy.

  38. CIDE January 11, 2011 at 9:54 pm -      #38

Awww….Still no Tron Vs Matrix debate. Or with the ammendments Tron Vs Matrix Vs Reboot.

  39. Michael50210 January 11, 2011 at 10:03 pm -      #39

“Xenomorphs better be in the second movie.”
That MIGHT be a bad idea….

” don’t even need to do that. Just aim my exhaust directly at Pandora and let the atmosphere fry. Or for better PR, take an asteroid for “mining” and “accidentally” drop it onto Pandora.”

They WANT the metal (unobtanium) on Pandora, remember? so frying the planet, or accidentally dropping a big freaking asteroid on it might complicate it a little bit

  40. Captain Epic January 11, 2011 at 10:03 pm -      #40

    Tron(1982) > Avatar

    Sorry folks!

  41. Gutsy January 11, 2011 at 10:05 pm -      #41

The “Falcons” or as it is correctly called Samsons are more closely related to multiutilty helicopters “dummy” not fighter planes or bomber planes. The only thing aircrafts in Avatar are helicopters or shuttles. I was only asking where are the planes, since they would’ve made the fail bombing mission much more easier.

  42. Zervziel January 11, 2011 at 10:09 pm -      #42

Shit, just think of the fun to be had by having the humans dropping several boatloads of xenos right on the Na’vi’s blue balls. With any luck the predators would come along for the joy of hunting Na’vi. It’d be pretty cool to see…….in fact it’d make for a great What if scenario……….brb.

  43. Cargo January 11, 2011 at 10:14 pm -      #43

“I was only asking where are the planes, since they would’ve made the fail bombing mission much more easier.”

Remember that this is a mining company and all the components have to be shipped from Earth. Helicopters are a bit better at maintaining a presence.

“The “Falcons” or as it is correctly called Samsons are more closely related to multiutilty helicopters “dummy” ”
The dummy thing was not serious but I get your point.

  45. Michael50210 January 11, 2011 at 10:57 pm -      #45

This is off-topic, but it’s making me lol a bit, so here

If you watch the Ring you die in 7 days , if you look at Chuck Norris you die instantly

Chuck Norris once gave away some watches. Later on the people he gave them to were known as the Mighty Morphing Power Rangers

In 1945 Chuck Norris drank a Redbull and jumped out a plane. For image results, Google the word Hiroshima.

  46. TheSorrow January 12, 2011 at 12:31 am -      #46

I still get chills from watching Avatar. I always feel disgusted and enraged when I see it.

  47. Syncourt January 12, 2011 at 1:20 am -      #47

Oooh…damn…I think I may lean towards Tron Legacy (as its fresh on my mind) for having the smexy lights and a Daft Punk soundtrack.

  48. Yamato-kun January 12, 2011 at 1:25 am -      #48

I wasn’t terribly fond of either movie for the reasons stated above, but I’m going to have to go with avatar merely on the grounds that it was slightly entertaining to watch while tron had me bored to shit the whole god damn time!

  49. ninjask19 January 12, 2011 at 3:49 am -      #49

God I couldnt stand Avatar, I really do believe story comes first and Avatar’s plot is just 50 minutes of plot shielding, 20 minutes of fight scenes and the rest was pseudo religous crap, sure tron dosen’t have the best plot but atleast it had a interesting one and i do perfer the general style of Tron, it had some good fight scenes which is less then i can say about Avatar, it is very hard to work guns into a real fight scene especially large scale considering normally even a shot to the back of the leg is enough to kill someone so unless you are a talanted director or just plain fluke your are going to create a unbelivable {in a bad way} and generally silly scene.

  50. FisherKing January 12, 2011 at 6:48 am -      #50

    Tron legacy without a doubt.

Avatar had some shitty message about conserving the forest and I hated how the aliens were basically stand ins for native Americans. The ending was terrible. He fucks over his own kind to go join the aliens? What kind of shit is that? And if humans are capable of traveling interstellar distances I know they are capable of dropping bombs from orbit instead of fighting the aliens on their own terms. The humans were fucking retarded. A stealth bomber or fighter jet could have dropped the same amount of explosives way way faster than those gunships could have with far less damage.

Tron legacy touched me on a whole ‘nother level. Everything about the movie was a masterpiece. The story, the special effects, and definitely the sound track. THe movie is on an epic scale. The scene where there was slow motion when sam is about to summon the lightcycle and there is that badass music playing is alone better than every scene in avatar.

  51. Zervziel January 12, 2011 at 7:19 pm -      #51

I think what got to most people about Avatar that made them dislike it is they went in for a few hours of entertainment and were subsequently preached and lectured to and told how much humans freaking suck and how awesome these blue thinly veiled Native American/Tribal African cat people are and how in tune with nature they are and that we’re such evil fucking bastards for exploiting our planet.

Ok a reasonable message however I didn’t pay up to get a lesson hammered into may head that I could have gotten for free and in a shorter amount of time from the freaking planeteers!

Story? Pah. Might as well been named “Pocahantas dances with wolves while reading “I am Joe” by Paul Anderson.”

Characters? Might as well have cardboard cutouts of the actors the characters were so shallow and one-sided.

Scenery and graphics: The only thing even remotely memorable about the movie is the graphics and the world the movie takes place in. However pretty graphics do not a good movie make. Same could be said of Tron, but Tron worked with what it had. The rave-esque settings meshed in with Daft Punk while people race tricked out lightcycles? That’s pretty cool.

Actually that is another thing Avatar did have that I liked which was the animals and the vehicles. Even then I was kinda frustrated that the Na’vi could throw away their distrust and even hate against Jake just because he went and got a new ride which effectively makes him freaking Jesus in their eyes. Even the dude, whose wife Jake freaking stole and was about to kill and gut Jake the tard when Quiritch pulled his ass out of the fire by ironically setting the Na’vi’s asses on fire, forgives him and treats hims as Blue Jesus. Character development and story continuity? Screw that, we need more flying scenes as well as MORE PREACHY BULLSHIT!!
Hell it got to where Jake’s giving his big moving speech (which had to be translated as Blue Jesus still wasn’t fluent in their tongue) even as going as far as to claim, “THIS IS OUR LAND!” Oh really? Your land, Jake? I confused as I could’ve sworn he was a freaking alien transplanted into a human/na’vi body which he puppeteered to earn their trust. Oh by the way, which had been conveniently supplied by the very humans he was knocking on. Genius. Plus him asking the Na’vi if they could ever so politely move so we humans could get to this incredibly useful element that humanity needed for interstellar travel was never shown, apparently the big plot element that put him there as the human ambassador to the Na’vi wasn’t important enough to show on screen.

Not to mention Jake Sully is quite frankly a very good example of a freaking Marty Stu. Don’t know what that is? Look it up.

  61. Whacko January 17, 2011 at 6:43 pm -      #61

Both were sub-par. I’ll have to give it to Avatar due to Tron’s visuals, I can’t stand watching black with various neon lights for any significant amount of time. Tron just hurts to look at, so it loses.

Still, when wathcing Avatar I got an urge to dive into the pile of old VHS’s and find Disney’s Pochahontas. Pretend it’s in space and you have a better movie about the exact same thing.

  62. Michael50210 January 17, 2011 at 8:11 pm -      #62

“Tron just hurts to look at, so it loses.”

Um, what? I stared at it just fine
