Most of you have seen my posts and can pretty much describe my debate style with less than flattering comments. And to be fair, I’ve realized recently that I do indeed need to tone it down. Before, I was basically a debater who swung insults and facts with equal gusto. I seek to change my methods as they are not meeting my goal on here. While many see me as some sort of brutish American who simply debates due to boredom and criticizes other’s posts with as much sensitivity as brick to the face – it’s for a reason. I DESPISE stupidity, ignorance, ineptitude, and every other word that can be related to the actions of a retard. So much so that I’ve made it my goal to raise the quality of the debates on this site by using very aggressive means to annihilate posts that are lackluster, ill-conceived, ridiculous, or downright dumb. By this way, I had hoped to get everyone (both visitors and ‘Pilers alike) to really THINK before they post though a sort of low-level fear of being shown as a fool. Simplified – “tough love” without the love.
However, it seems I’ve grown overzealous in this regard and it’s only leading to a bunch of “debaters” tripping over themselves trying to get back at me. As laughable as their attempts are, it seems that I’ve actually become a sort of instigator of stupidity (through their actions), than the leading cause of its downfall. So, I’ve decided to tone down my debate style in a number of ways. The most important is to refrain from insult until I’ve already shown why a point/view/evidence/etc. was stupid/wrong/invalid and if they press the point – then bring the pain. The second is to drop my perceptions of certain debaters and give them a blank slate from now on. From this point – Everyone, and I mean everyone, is worth listening too, until they seriously screw up again. Which….. Sadly won’t be too hard for some of us, will it? The last is that, from now on, no profanity directed at another until it’s first directed at me. In other words, I won’t write F*ck, Sh%t, @$$, or any other cuss word (and directed at another in a derogatory manner) as long as the ones that I debate with respect the same.
I also compel others to take similar efforts to reduce the amount of flaming, profanity, and general “new fish” behavior on this site. Just because people make mistakes, doesn’t mean they’re retarded, stupid, or just devoid of all of their brain cells. It’s the repetition of mistakes that makes someone truly an inept individual. So…. considering the recent tone of most of my “debates,” I’m willing to let everyone to make a couple mistakes and still keep it civil, respectful, and even helpful. If I’m willing to take a step, will you do the same fellow ‘Pilers?
Oh… don’t abuse this clean slate I’m giving everyone. If you insist upon repeatedly making ridiculous mistakes, making logical jumps the size of the Grand Canyon, ignoring the rules, not thinking at all, or insulting me just for the sake of getting back at me – I’ll be more than willing to bring the pain in the form of two metaphorical canes, that weight several tons each.

The V ontop of a rock is an appropriate picture.

Good call, Kenny, good call.
I’ve fallen into the “swear at everyone who don’t seem like geniuses” trap a few times, which I really shouldn’t considering I’m not exactly one of the top minds here myself. I hope the debates will stay more civil from now on.
That said, I still hope L-W returns to kicks some serious ass. This site isn’t the same without his tirades on the brainless. As in, all of us.
Don’t worry Kenny, the people that get butt hurt over their asses getting pwned are just insecure about their dignity.
You may change your attitude, but they won’t change their’s
orpheus, shut up. Trying to work for a more friendly community is a good idea, and starting of by having yet another comment with “butt hurt” on the site straight away ain’t going to help. Give it a shot, and then you can swear at them if they still don’t meet your requirements afterwards. You’ve got nothing to lose.
Deal?
I concur with your statement Kenny.
- pf
So kenny made this or did admin?
@overlord – Kenny C. wrote this up.
Good to know admin, good to know.
Wholly agreed Kenny.
A clean slate could well do us all good. I for one will attempt to no longer judge people for their tastes in fiction, be it Nintendo-based, Eragon-Based or anything else I find distasteful. I will also attempt to be more forgiving of grammatical errors, text-talk and misspellings.
Actually, all in all thats not a bad idea.
Lets have a bit of a “New Years Resolution” event.
General civility is what attracted me here in the first place. All too often in another argument thread everyone would quickly degenerate into cursing.
Without being patronizing, I respect your new leaf and hope many learn from your example.
“orpheus, shut up. Trying to work for a more friendly community is a good idea, and starting of by having yet another comment with “butt hurt” on the site straight away ain’t going to help.”
Hey, I completely agree with what Kenny is saying, I’m stating a fact that eventually we’re going to see those that degenerated and will revert to theire not so “civil” ways.
-telling someone to shutup after voicing their opinion wasn’t how I visualized a “friendly community” to be.
Nice change Kenny,I loved Factpile for it’s level of civility.
It’s my 151st comment.Yay,MOAR COMMENTS!
“-telling someone to shutup after voicing their opinion wasn’t how I visualized a “friendly community” to be.”
The local equivalent of “shut up” is what everyone says in these situations, and it’s not considered rude in the slightest. Therefore, I do occasionally use it on the interwebz when I really shouldn’t, as I’m well aware It’s rather rude in English. A mistake on my part I’ll try to correct. My thanks for notifying me.
That said, please refrain from stating what you believe to be fact about how people will end up. There’s every possibility that this civility movement won’t work in the long run, but saying that people will revert to uncivil ways ruins some of the meaning of blank slates. Let’s keep the judgment for later.
I, as a representative of those who are probably going to screw up, thank you for your leniency. I think that for the most part Pilers manage to reserve their fiercest attacks on people who repeat arguments that have been overturned or exude extreme fanboyism, a shift towards civility never hurt.
This may be a new age in factpile history, we should make a calender.
I call this the Age of civility.
“I call this the Age of civility.”*laughs a little* Guess I won’t fit in.
@ Factpilers
Guys….. come on…. do I really have to be the only one that submits articles now? Where is all that creative energy I saw last year? Make it about anything! Why old comics are better than new comics, the differences between SC1 and SC2 (what you hate or love), why you prefer old cars to new cars, why the Gaming industry has become stagnant for creative ideas, anything!
Just write something and submit it. Just make sure its in line with the interests of the site and I’m pretty sure that admin will run it.
fucking LMAO. That’s all I can say to the above rant.
Let’s do another “which actress is hotter”
Well, fisherking, seems you’re off to a flying start.
“seems you’re off to a flying start.” He must be one of those flying fish.
I show what I like and submit it to add meat to recaps.
Writing isn’t something I like to do anymore, school made sure of that.
“Well, fisherking, seems you’re off to a flying start.”
Of course I am.
“Let’s do another “which actress is hotter””
The comparing bands one was better.
” Well, fisherking, seems you’re off to a flying start. ”
- I’m not quite sure what he meant by his post, so I can’t really respond to it. Especially since he seems to be in such a rush that he needed to use “LAMO” instead of actually typing it like you learn school.
* “in” school. Grammar was never my strong point.
Criticizing someone for using a commonly used abbreviation, then making a grammar mistake yourself, is pretty fucking sad. Why were you in such a rush you couldn’t proof read your post?
How ironic would it be if a huge argument broke out on this very thread?
But wholeheartedly agreed, in regards to the article itself. Slinging insults only makes everyone angry, and then affected threads tend to spiral into an uncontrollable vortex of profanity, stupidity, hypocrisy and stagnation. And nobody wants that.
Also I put “LMAO” not “LAMO”. Two very different phrases.
Nice to know there’s finally a new article here after what seemed to be such a long time. I applaud your initiative KennyC keep it up
“Criticizing someone for using a commonly used abbreviation, then making a grammar mistake yourself, is pretty fucking sad. Why were you in such a rush you couldn’t proof read your post?”
Exactly what I mean by “off to a flying start”. In this very civility thread you’ve managed to use two forms of the word fuck, which isn’t commonly regarded as too polite. The first time was bearable, calling Kenny C fucking sad for disliking abbreviations while missing one word is not. Seems like you are not interested in supporting this project.
Im already starting to laugh, about the sheer thought of irony on this thread.
So this message means i cant cuss in my arguements anymore if
(stands out in the rain with fist in the air) NOOOOOOOOO CURSE YOU ALLLLLLLLL
- ci
“Exactly what I mean by “off to a flying start”. In this very civility thread you’ve managed to use two forms of the word fuck, which isn’t commonly regarded as too polite. ”
Both times were used as emphasis, not as a direct insult but I am terribly sorry If I hurt your feelings by saying bad words.
” The first time was bearable, calling Kenny C fucking sad for disliking abbreviations while missing one word is not. ”
Stop being such a dick rider, he never said anything about disliking abbreviations. He said I must have been in some sort of rush because I used an abbreviation, which doesn’t make sense, then he goes on to make 2 mistakes. Well obviously he was also in a rush it seems if you couldn’t proof read.
“Seems like you are not interested in supporting this project.”
Oh I’m all for civility I just don’t like hypocrites.
“I still hope L-W returns to kicks some serious ass. This site isn’t the same without his tirades on the brainless.”
Stop being a dick rider bro. I’m not sure i know this dude L-W but i know for a fact he isnt more awesome as me so please stop being a cheer leader aka dick rider
- ci
Yeah, no fucking dick riders allowed.
And debating without insults just makes everything boring.
“Stop being a dick rider bro. I’m not sure i know this dude L-W but i know for a fact he isnt more awesome as me so please stop being a cheer leader aka dick rider
- ci”
Chuck go check out the old Star Wars vs Halo threads. About 700 or 800 comments into the thing. I believe after you see how L-W debated the Halo side in the argument, you would change your minds. I am not saying one cannnot debate L-W on an given point, but to simply be aware that he is a very effective debater who knows his sources and math.
- pf
Or most of the the major universe debates for that matter.
Is Dick Rider a famous male cheerleader? I’ve never heard of him (not that I would know anyway)
” Well obviously he was also in a rush it seems if you couldn’t proof read. ”
- Indeed. Had to rush to make it to a meeting.
” Oh I’m all for civility I just don’t like hypocrites. ”
- What? I’m not sure I understand. Who’s being a hypocrite?
@ FPs – Please, keep it civil on this thread. However, if someone makes a dick move or is just acting like a dick – I won’t stop you from making your point.
” Criticizing someone for using a commonly used abbreviation, then making a grammar mistake yourself, is pretty fucking sad. ”
” Stop being such a dick rider, he never said anything about disliking abbreviations. He said I must have been in some sort of rush because I used an abbreviation, which doesn’t make sense ”
- Confusion abounds when the same person makes these two statements.
@ Kenny C.
Bro just stop while you’re behind. You make less and less sense with every post.
” You make less and less sense with every post. ”
- Ditto. I can’t even divine the purpose or composition of your first post. I’ve thought of a number of possiblities, but so far they all encompass senseless actions or me feeling even sadder for you.
FOOD STAMPS!!!! I GOT THOSE FOOD STAMPS!!!! ANYBODY WANT FOODSTAMPS!!!!
- ci
@ Chuck Inglish
I think you have already tarnished away your clean slate.
“I think you have already tarnished away your clean slate.”
Whats that supposed to mean
- ci
“Whats that supposed to mean”
You made a comment in this thread that had absolutely nothing to add to the discussion, a recurring theme for you. Please if I am wrong tell me how “FOOD STAMPS!!!! I GOT THOSE FOOD STAMPS!!!! ANYBODY WANT FOODSTAMPS!!!!” adds anything positive to this discussions. Although you haven’t started using the stupid catchphrases at the end of your comments, so that is a plus on your side.
@krazy
Well excuuuuuuuse me for trying to livin up the place
- ci
And I always find, yeah, I always find somethin’ wrong
You been puttin’ up wit’ my shit just way too long
I’m so gifted at findin’ what I don’t like the most
So I think it’s time for us to have a toast
Let’s have a toast for the douchebags,
Let’s have a toast for the assholes,
Let’s have a toast for the scumbags,
Every one of them that I know
Let’s have a toast to the jerkoffs
That’ll never take work off
- ci
@chuck Inglish
There is a place for that kind of stuff, it isn’t the discussions, but rather the forums. So if you want to make those sort of comments don’t clutter the discussions with them, take it to the forums.
On behalf of the new factpilers, I would like to present Kenny with a cookie.
I would also like to present a hug to every factpiler who gets involved in the civility project (please dont make it awkward)
Chuck inglish, I would like those food stamps please
“Chuck inglish, I would like those food stamps please”
Lol sorry dude but i just sold em all to that krazycrismore guy
- ci
I like this idea. I’ll give it a go.
Thank you Kenny C for taking the first step in buring the hatchet. Well done.
Now, brownies for everyone who gives this is try.
I’ll get the cupcakes.
I already knew that an argument would break out, it’s nothing new really. We have quite a few members on this site who think they are humorous and try making witty comments, who of course fail appallingly. Then someone else comes along, says something that sparks another senseless comment by the first person and then it steadily goes down hill from there.
” I can’t even divine the purpose or composition of your first post.”
I think you mean define.
Dumbass halo fanboys can’t even make a damn sentence right.
Incredible… as soon as I make a post about members failing at making witty comments, one steps right up to the plate.
It’s almost like they do this on purpose.
Almost, but I rarely think that any of them are smart enough for that.
“Now, brownies for everyone who gives this is try.”
Special brownies? I could provide the love for them.
@Kenny on articles.
If I write anything,I know that it will be immediately shunned, either because of my user name,or my occupation,or even my lurking here on the main site.
” Incredible… as soon as I make a post about members failing at making witty comments, one steps right up to the plate.”
- Indeed… and I really don’t feel like giving another English lesson on this site. Its almost like they don’t think to check the dictionary when they see a word they don’t think is used right.
@ Everyone
Divine –
” –verb (used with object)
13. to discover or declare (something obscure or in the future) by divination; prophesy.
14. to discover (water, metal, etc.) by means of a divining rod.
15. to perceive by intuition or insight; conjecture.
16. Archaic . to portend. ”
- Just so we get that straightened out, divine was used correctly – increase your vocab. people, its not that hard.
“increase your vocab. people, its not that hard.”
Srsly!
…
…wut?
That’s hardly his point about being creative Diana. He never said that grammar and vocabulary were apart of the creativity.
But when you’re being creative you should probably be formal, and grammar-smart, and use your verbs at the very least… makes it a little less irritating for me to read, and for others.
” So now sweetie your main point of wanting the others here to bring forth their creativity is to learn English grammar and vocabulary.”
- Not really…. considering that was two seperate posts. For some reason, your criticisms of me are the only ones that truly bother me. What mind tricks did you use on me?
“What mind tricks did you use on me?”
Warmth and affection.
She’s enchanting you with her feminine charms. That’s a -2 will save penalty.
@topic
I’m all for this civility movement. I avoid insults in general and usualy opt to take the path of logical debate (even though it sometimes feels like talking to a wall when arguing against certain people). When I do give in to the dark side I more often then not take the path of insultingly excessive politeness. I find it far more satisfying then throwing curses at people.
Though I try to avoid that as well, it rarely contributes to a debate.
“I’ve fallen into the “swear at everyone who don’t seem like geniuses” trap a few times”
who said its a trap? seems more like a stream of chocolate to me!!, FUCKING DUMB CUNT!!!
(lol jokes, i kid i kid)
I also support this new effort, I think it’s time factpile became less of a “i use enough ‘logic’ to counter your argument and them make you look like an idiot!!” as opposed to a more professional debating site.
Do we care more about logic, or petty insults? One of the two is mastered by the end of one’s Middle School education, and the other is continuously being improved upon by Doctorate level mathematicians. Which one does our site claim to be a pile of?
However, I say to go one step farther. Should an instigator arise with a foul mouth who seeks to disrupt the civility; don’t fight fire with fire. This is how threads ‘burn’ so to say. As the common expression goes: don’t feed the troll, we should also not fuel flame wars. Either continue to respond to them in a civil manner, and let their immaturity isolate them, or simply ignore them completely. One should have to earn their civility and right to contribute. As DRAGON has shown, nobody has an inherent right to post on Factpile, there are certain standards to be met.
In short, I commend Kenny’s efforts and hope our fellow posters would respond with even half the enthusiasm that he is.
maybe some of you people can help me with a problem i have in the drizzt vs richard rahl debate. civility has almost lost it’s course with me. i don’t want to persuade you to either side so i won’t tell you anything about what’s happening, but if you are interested just read the thread and maybe you can put everything straight. and stop the bickering, partly from me, but honestly only because i get so frustrated with the circumstances.
Meh whats a few “Fuck You, go Die!!!” between acquaintances
also you can’t just disregard someones logic and or arguement because he put a few/alot Cuss words in
……….of course I don’t usually debate (srsly at least) so i guess My opinion is kinda invalid/irrelevent
Bah its admins site, He can do what he wants with it if he wants to turn it into a Formal Debating site thats fine by me
this is a good thing for all of us but i fear some pilers will only abuse this slate…
on a positive note-would an increase in such bad behaviour bring about the appearance of the banhammer?

First off I hope you can follow through with your initiative and will support if you can follow through with it…. Seriously though good luck.
Now to the point I’ll take your challenge and once my computer is back up 100% than I will begin work on an article of my own. Currently though I got a bunch of ideas bouncing in my head right now so I have to pick one that I can write an article with. So give me a month or two. Unless I get on a roll. Certainly thinging about a movie review or something movie related. (Since my computer has been unuseable lately I have been watching of alot of old movies I grew up with)

yeah i totally would, But that would mean i would have to do things like
Proof reading, Spellchecking, Coherant sentences, Proper Grammar & Spelling
you get the picture
@Siggymans
Theres the problem, for spell checking breaks rule #86 (please get the reference)
It’s interesting how the comments in this article developed, its almost psychological. As I read the comments, there was this tension, as if someone was about to burst with swears for no apparent reason, and than it happened. An arguement that was basically started because someone put “LAMO” instead of “LMAO” turned into a flame war, which ironically, the writer of the article was forced into.
The second arguement spurred from Chuck Inglish (great guy) sharing his thoughts about L-W.
The third was spurred by Chuck Inglish declaring he was selling food stamps (YOU BASTARD!!! I WANT FOOD!!!), which was met rather aggressively.
The fourth, and my favourite, was over GRAMMAR… seriously, come on!!! It’s the internet. Yes, proper spelling and grammar is asked for in this site, but we are still human. I don’t think people look for a dictionary or thesaurus to post on factpile, so the miss use of ONE word is nothing to make people throw a grammer nuke.
My message is, lighten up, life is random, which makes random people important (I think) and we all make mistakes.
The phrase “grammar nuke” is copyright of the BLUEFIRE VOCABULARY LIST. May only be used with permission.

I glad to see some Maturity on Factpile well………..to an extent.great job kenny I’ll try to make a Article too.
I need to do an article soon as well. I need to get back into it.
@bluefreXD
“I would also like to present a hug to every factpiler who gets involved in the civility project (please dont make it awkward)”
Sorry, I don’t do hugs, but as for the article, I’d like to say I’ve been following these guidelines since my first post. Since I’ve been trying to resurrect chivelry in ALL aspects of my live, it’s a natural step.
meh this really doesn’t do anything…if wanna swear in a post i will…whats the worst that could happen? people get shitty and start typing in ALL CAPS?
overall this thread did nothing
