Lost Vs X-Files

Lost Vs X-Files

You had to know this was coming with the final season of Lost airing tonight in the States. While I have to admit that it took me a bit of time to get into Lost, it really has some great story telling elements that can take you down paths you weren’t expecting.

X-Files on the other hand was a mythology that was built up over time with little peaks into the inner workings of the entire story. The unfortunate thing about the X-Files is how long the series ran. As soon as Moulder was gone, the show was permanently damaged.

I have to say that I did like the way X-Files ended, but will we be able to do the same for the castaways of Lost?

Which show do you think is better?

Ahhhh, somehow I DID see it comming.

XFiles is the great originator. Without it, Lost could have never worked. That said, I honestly can’t think of any show that can surpass Lost’s epicocity. At least not in the Sci-fi genre.

I don’t have any opinions on how the finales would match up against one another at this point. I may have a better view of it all after tonight’s premiere. I suspect that the argument will not trully be closed till after the actual series finale, though.

Even then, the Files already have two blockbusters that continued its mythos. I wouldn’t count JJ and a Lost related movie out just yet either.

    We’ll see.
    —————-

On another note, I just learned that JJ has the rights to Stephen King’s Dark Tower. Sure, I learned of it quite late, but I kid you not when I say I soiled my pants anyways.

That will be far beyond a total mind fuck. King’s epic is right up JJ’s thematic alley.

So last night’s delicious mind-fuck did not dissapoint. Anyone care to discuss the events and theories of the epic premier?

    @Matapiojo –

Here are some of my initial thoughts:

I’m almost thinking that in order to get to the “it worked” reality, you have to die. How could Juliet tell Miles that it worked if she was supposed to be dead? (How would she know?)

Faraday might be around in the current reality to help out with the headaches of existing in two places at once…

Desmond, Jack’s father and Locke’s knives all disappear from the plane – hmm…

what was Desmond DOING on the plane? He wasn’t on the original flight. And, did Jack remember him from the island or from when he saw him that one time when they were running on the stairs?
Why didn’t the Locke smoke monster kill Ben? And, why didn’t Richard let them shoot the Locke smoke
monster when he figured out who he was??

    AH!

Ok, here I go (needless to say, there are major SPOILERS from this post onward).

I know that JJ has a love affair with parallel dimensions. We see this in both Fringe, and Star Trek. Now its Lost’s turn to join this group.

I think that the detonation of the bomb by Juliet actually fractured reality into two parallel universes. One where the Incident wiped out the island, thus event never happening, and one where the crew simply returned to their regular place in time. Since we are already used to flashbacks and flashforwards, the creative team is now giving us “what if” flashes. Glimpses into the parallel where Faraday’s theory worked.

How do I come about these conclussions?

Well, Oceanic Flight 815 continued as it was never pulled into the island by Desmond’s inability to press the button in the Swan station in time. Desmond never crashed into the island because the Incident sank it 30 years before (I have no real theory as to why or how he is in the flight at that time, but then again, he is the “wild card”).

However, we are seeing that the events that took place on the island after the crash are slowly being replicated on the flight in the parallel universe. This is supported by Charlie’s “I was supposed to die” line.

1 – Jack saves Charlie’s life from asphixiation just like he did when Ethan hung him from a tree.
2 – Kate still gets away from the marshal, who got his skull cracked as he did during the plane’s turbulence (still unsure if Sawyer helps her to this end on the island).
3 – Locke still looses his bag, as well as Jack looses his father.
4 – Jin still gets in trouble due to his delivery, and Sun still refuses to acknowledge she knows English.

Now, the things that still have me on the fence is the handfull of anomalies. Ruth is not separated from Bernard as they were on the crash (this may still happen on the airport or some such), and Hugo’s curse is now a blessing, as well as Boone being unable to talk his sister into leaving Australia. There are still other issues regarding the passengers we have yet to see such as Eko, Libby, and Ana-Lucia’s tie-ins, but there is still some time for them to join the fray as they were in the tail of the plane. Then theres the suspicious abscense of Michel and Walt…

    …brain hurts…

Eko – I think is one of my all time favorite characters, I’d love to see him come back.

I like the theory you have about the parallel universes and how some of the events still transpire, just off the island.

What about the “Man in Black” Locke? Nice to see them continue to use him for the show. Just wondering how this entire “Good vs Evil” theme plays out.

See, I have yet another lavish theory about those two, and while there is in fact a GvE theme going on, it is far more complex than that.

Eko, is hands down my favorite character. Now that the nature of the moster has been revealed (though I already had a 99% correct suspision since last season), they HAVE to address Eko once more. The Man in black/Smoke Monster made obvious display of its interest in two characters since their appereance on the island. The monster studied and “forgave” both Locke and Eko.

We now know that it did so for Locke due to him being a great catalyst for the “loophole” in Ben, but we don’t really know why Eko was eventually dismissed and killed. That is an issue they have to touch before they close the series. Doesn’t mean the character has to make an appereance, though, but I am still very hopeful to see the epic man swinging his jesus Stick.

As for my Jacob/Man in Black theory…

I think these two entities are based on two very specific deities from the Egyptian Pantheon. The statue Jacop inhabited was that of the Egyptian god, Sobek. This god was believed to be the patron of the Nile river. The river in turn was extremely symbolic to the Egyptian people as the source of life for the region, thus making Sobek the god of life.

On the other side of this coin, we see that the Man in Black has some domination over the dead where he can conjure up images from the deceased, and take the form of the deceased. We have not seen this same influence over any living being (yet). Thus making it possible for this being to be the representation of Anubis.

This cycle of life and death is further supported by the inherent natures shown in Jacob’s faith in humanity, and the Man in Black’s lack of faith in them.

However, my theory still leaves a gap regarding the Man in Black as certain traits of his personality could be tied to Set or Apep instead of Anubis. The smoke monster behaves as a couling snake (Apep), and some people on the island have been corrupted (Set) such as Ben and the French explorers. There is always the possibility that he could be the representation of both as Set was later beleived to have absorbed Apep.

In all this, I cannot place the statement the Man in Black said about him wanting to go home into my theory. This could be Apep stating he wants to be part of the mainstream pantheon once more, but I am just overreaching on that one.

Regardless, I think the “Others” Jacob warns the man in black to be comming could be the rest of the Egyptian pantheon.

It would be great to see the Egyptian mythology used as the backbone to the story-telling of Lost. I have to admit that I never thought that way before, but now you’ve got me thinking…

This is why the show is at THE top of my list, and certainly topping X-Files. Lost simply has an incredible amount of layers that viewers like myself cant help but be compelled by. If the answers given turn out to be simple, I would be mildly dissapointed indeed, but it would not take away the thrill of the ride as it developped. No other show has made my brain work as hard, and I love JJ and his team for it.

Most cassual viewers will only see madness and confusion, but all I see is a huge dish of epic served with a supple side of awesome.
