2010: What to Expect

2010: What to Expect

Happy holidays to all who celebrate them. Well now, quite the year we just had, eh? We crossed the magical 50,000+ comments mark, launched FactPileTopia.com, gave away a wee bit o’ schwag and introduced some new sections as well as a new look for the site. FactPile got it’s own server to help with speed of delivering content to the readers, and on a personal note, I’m proud that the goal of 2 posts everyday was met (not as easy as you might think!)

I know that sometimes it takes a while for a request to make the site. Keep in mind that I have over 2,000 requests to sort through and everyday on average around 15 requests come in. I’m not complaining – I love the fact that soo many of you have some great ideas for matches, I just wish I could crank them all out faster. By my estimation, even if the requests stopped today, there are enough to post on FactPile for the next 2 1/2 years! THANK YOU! There have been some strange matches requested that I don’t know will ever make the site. Not because they are strange, but I just can’t find the right image to use for the site. So, the more you can provide me, the better the chance that the request gets posted!

Any ideas you have in mind always feel free to send them to me. I read everything that comes in and all comments on the site. Sometimes I might be able to reply immediately, and other times by the time I see it, someone else has usually accounted for it. So while it might not appear that the audience is listening, we are…

On the question of the bug for my gravatar – it’s from an old MSN anti-virus piece of software. The full image is a bug crawling over a circuit board, as they were trying to demonstrate what a virus could do to your computer. I took the image since to me it represents organic life using technology to get to where they want to go. Mix that with Agent Smith of the Matrix statement of humans are like viruses, consuming all resources before moving on to another area, I felt really ties into the web – sites rise in popularity, plateau, then turn into wastelands. But I did like Mata’s suggestion that anytime I try to fix the site, it gets ‘buggy’ for a bit of time and that could work just as well.

So what lies ahead? Expansion. But not in a typical sense. FactPile will be teaming up with other independent gaming/tv/movie/comic sites to be part of a network that will make the “big boys” like IGN take notice. Just because we don’t have the number of readers those sites have doesn’t mean that we don’t have better content and passionate readers that frequent our sites. I’ve also kept a list of all the sites who rejected FactPile outright – just for future reference ;-)

Now, soon you will see some new items to just generally help out and kill time. I will be launching a proxy site for anyone who can’t reach the site normally, it will be a “FactPile Only” place for us. I’m not going to advertise the url, but all readers of this site will know about it should they ever be blocked somewhere online…

Expect to see the ‘Sponsored Reviews’ section to get more commercial. I’ve been sitting on a bunch of items as I wanted to make sure the site was functional to where I wanted it to be before taking in some cash. When you see those posts, keep in mind that I am being paid to talk about those products/services, so keep that in mind while reading! I’ll always disclose which ones were “sponsored” and which ones were things I wanted to talk about with no reward for doing so.

I’ve also acquired an online rpg space game – nothing great, but an interesting time kill for those who have it. I will also be launching a free online arcade site that will have all the classics and hopefully tie in to some posts…

Every year brings un-expected surprises and I’m sure 2010 will not disappoint. I just wanted to take the time to say “Thanks” to all who have helped turn FactPile into what it is today, and what it will become. This site would be just another blip on the Internet radar if it weren’t for you being here today and sharing your ideas, thoughts and insults!

“It’s not until you fight for something that you become who you are.”

Tons of requests that could reach more than 20 years?!! Hell, now I know that ’tis not only posting comments that filling this site. So far I could remember my last match request 5 months ago

Oh, merging up with IGN? Sounds like rock climbing using only bare hands.

  2. admin December 28, 2009 at 9:13 am -      #2

@Diana – Thanks for the reply. I’ve been thinking about a way to have everyone who submits thier comments be able to rank the order that they would like for them to appear. Not sure yet, but I’ll figure out something.

As to IGN – I know FactPile wouldn’t become a part of their network since they (IGN) would want control over the content of the site, and that’s something I will never relinquish.

  3. Diana December 28, 2009 at 9:33 am -      #3

    @Admin

Comments with ranking? But, what kind of stratification would that be? Most probably everyone else would want to be on the top of the food pyramid.

On the IGN – The guys on this are more than just just a consortium when they do things on gaming news & updates as well as an online game shop. But would they even give attention to Factpile even just for a mirror site? Nevertheless you’re right, assimilation is what Factpile will get.

Anyway, Factpile is still an excellent all-around based forum like no other!

Let the high times fly and the good times roll for 2010!

Well…. who are these websites we’re teaming up with?
And who the hell rejected us?

You’ll start to see them appear in the footer section of the site. A lot of them are taking this week off so you most likely won’t notice anything until the new year. – Admin

@Diana – Not the comments, but the battle requests. As you mentioned in your first post, the last request of yours made the site a few months ago. I’d like to have a way where readers can select the order of how the matches would get made, based on their individual requests. That way if there is a match you really want, it could get pushed to the top of the list.

I have another way of getting over this, but I need to figure out some more technical stuff first, and I think it would give everyone on the site a sense of ownership…

Oh man, I thought this site was good before, It just keeps getting better!
I hope the merge dosent bring us a new breed of fanboy, that’d be bad. And does it matter if we have or dont have links comming from our names when recusting matches?

  7. Expert December 28, 2009 at 10:26 am -      #7

hmmm… So what exactly should I be expecting?

  8. AHEM December 28, 2009 at 1:40 pm -      #8

It’s nearly the dawn of 2010, and I can hardly think of a better way to go into the new year than a post like this. It really gives a sense of advancement to it all.

I’d better get back to posting if I want to reach my new year’s resolution of reaching the esteemed post count of 1000.

  9. AHEM December 28, 2009 at 2:58 pm -      #9

I don’t really have anything else to say on this topic, but I was looking for a particularly appropriate place to put this comment and I think this is the best place.

    W00t! 1000 posts and 20 full stars!

    thanks admin…

I was starting to wonder where this site was going what with the new layout and the more varied posts etc but that has put everything right in my head, and it all sounds good into the bargain!

but dont join us with IGN or something similar, I have always thought we had quite a closed community on this site and whilst expansion is more than necessary joining with a group that’s too big would ruin that, if you get my my meaning.

I’m pretty sure none of that made sence so whatever

    happy new year

^ I concur with my wookie friend.

Joining with another website I eh. I was a little skeptical about this idea at first. Though after thinking about it I believe it’s a pretty good idea. This could mean more pilers and more fanboys and trolls. I know this sounds bad but this could bring more interest to the site, and we would certainly hear the last of “Factpile is dead!” or “It’s too boring now!”. Don’t worry about the fan boys and the trolls either. Within them are also people with brains. I totally trust Admin with this and am a full supporter.

  14. Megaraptor18 December 28, 2009 at 6:24 pm -      #14

As long as Admin has control of Factpile and Factpile has an equal or better deal than I will go with it.

    What happened to him?

  18. Megaraptor18 January 1, 2010 at 12:04 am -      #18

    @ Envoy

To be honest I had that message on my combputer for an hour waiting to post it.

I also told my sister and aunt happy birthday at the sametime by posting a happy birthday messsage on their facebook.

Also Space Marine left because he didn’t like the way the site was going. He said Factpile was a dead site (even though it’s not) and left.

Here is his farewell on the Forum
    www.factpiletopia.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=559

If I understand it right he didn’t like the fact that more people was showing up or something like that.

“Please everybody come to the topia I need people to talk too.”

I probably will join up when I finish a few more chapters of the story I posted in the original forum… My spirits aren’t high enough to be in a writing mood however (seems like perpetual writer’s block), it might take some time.

  24. Megaraptor18 January 1, 2010 at 12:55 am -      #24

    “- Ackward turtle in motion.”

Hey man he joined the forum. Right now we got 68 members and I’m hoping to get at least a 100 members.

  25. Megaraptor18 January 1, 2010 at 12:58 am -      #25

    (seems like perpetual writer’s block)

God as a writer myself I know what your going it sucks. I find that either reread your work or start a new story. I know it sounds wield but sometimes when I’m working on my Fan Fic for Factpile I get ideas for my main novel.

    So good luck man.

    Edit

“God as a writer myself I know what your going it sucks”

God as a writer myself I know what your going through… It sucks

I forgot to add that what I said in my last comment mostly helps out when you have writers block

“Don’t sweat it Mega-man. Thanks for the encouragement and advice!”

Your welcome good luck it’s not easy writing story. Everytime you want to take a story wise short cut but you can’t if you want it to be good. Right now I’m working on five or six different stories. So I will again wish you good luck.

“Right now I’m working on five or six different stories.”

Wow, that’s quite a lot… I wish you luck as well.

Change is inevitable in all things. Whether it’s for the better or worse will be determined by the time we cross the thresholds.

  31. Matapiojo January 4, 2010 at 8:02 am -      #31

First, great to hear about the plans for 2010, boss. As always, I am readily available to lend whatever helping hand I can should you need it.

Second, FactPileTopia is FactPile. If you like it here, you will like it there. Everybody is indeed welcomed.
